Clutch driving question.

What happens when shift to neutral and leave it there for more then one minute? A friend of mine told me something bad happens, but i dont know.

I could answer your question if you would clarify what you mean by "leave your clutch on neutral". That is not a valid car expression.

questions edited. Hes probably full of sh*t but he said that you shouldn't leave your car on neutral for more then a minute, i'm assuming he ment when the car was on because when i turn off my car i always leave it on netural with the emergency break pulled up.

Also, is there really a difference when leaving your car on first gear or neutral when you turn it off? Is any of them better.

In that case, your U joints will snap and you'll drop the tranny and lock the diff.

having the clutch pushed in all the time will wear out the throwout bearing a lot faster. resting your foot on the clutch, before the disc actually disengages, will do this too. doesnt matter what gear the transmission is in for that wear to occur.

Ah. Nothing happens. Your friend is full of sh!t. Either that or you misunderstood what he was trying to tell you. The engine crankshaft turns (through the clutch) the input shaft of the transmission which then floats freely on its bearings. Maybe he meant something else?

Was the car moving initially? If you are in a closed garage, yeah something very bad can happen.

If you are talking about coasting, I don't see anything bad about it, unless you are in steep down hill in which case you need the tranny and the brake to maintain proper speed.

I agree with the above, and probably that's what your friend meant - you should not keep the clutch pedal pressed longer than what is neccessary to change gears (or shift to neutral), for example while waiting for the traffic light to change.

i thought putting the car in neutral will overload the supercharger and the vtec system will reset the torque band to 9750rpm and the manual intake manifold will require some head light lubricant?

I think everyone is taking this too far... I am assuming you are talking about letting the car 'idle' in nuetral. This will not harm your car.

Obviously, the only remedy to this problem is to get going as fast as you can downhill, in 5th gear, then quickly drop it into reverse. It's an easy little known way to change your trasmission fluid.

(Do not attempt without supervision of trained professional.)

That is illegal in almost every state believe it or not. I don't know how it could actually be enforced though. The issue is you can not move forward fast enough if you are in neutral.
