Clunked

Mom's van was dying so we clunked it and got a Mazda3 i Touring in graphite. The only thing that sucked was that the difference between mileage of the cars has to be 10mpg to get the $4500. The rated mileage of the van was 19 and the 3 was 28, so 1 mpg cost us $1000. Oh well, $3500 is more than trade in value for a van with 150,000 miles on it and hole in the front passenger side fender. I also bought myself a Celestial Blue Mazdaspeed3. I'll upload some pics once it's not raining outside. Got a decent deal since we bought the two cars together. The local dealer was bullshitting some $2000 market value adjustment on the Speed3. The second I heard him say that, I knew he wasn't willing to sell, so we went to another dealer who said nothing about any "adjustment."

edit: we were supposed to get free window tint b/c of my mom's employer having a deal or preferred dealership sort of setup, but the salesman said we couldn't get it because we were below the employee discount/agreement price or w/e. So while talking to the manager while working out the financing and what not we told him that my mom's employer and the dealership have an agreement for free tinting. So the cars are getting free tinting tomorrow. lol

I wonder how these stealerships live with themselves pulling endless sh*t on people all day long, aholes.

Hope you like the cars!

How did you manage to trade a vehicle under Clunkers that gets 19mpg? Everything I've read says the cutoff was 18mpg.

They do well...as long as we keep giving them our money, they will continue to act as though its a fucking privilege to walk on their lot. Bottom feeders. Fuggem.

I ended up holding onto my "clunker" because of timing... we don't need anything just yet, though the Honda dealership who wouldn't give us another $500 off (still above invoice) helped that decision. I do feel like I got ripped off of $4500 (for a $1k car) though. My mom just bought a C300 and I would've "given" her the thing to clunk if only those C300s got 1mpg more.

While shopping around for the Mazda5 also, they couldn't keep most of the 3s on the lot they were going so fast. Lucky you got in on two.

we were looking for 2009s but by the time we even got to the dealerships, they were gone. Tons of 3s in all sorts of flavors on the lots though.

The government is acting the same way by creating this program.

2nd tank of gas = 352 miles, 13.9gal fill up of 89 = 25.3 mpg. Not bad for about 75% freeway/25% city driving. The torque steer is pretty manageable. The only problem I have is that 6th need to be taller. 3000rpm at 75 ~ 27 mpg.

25mpg is terrible if you're driving 75% of the time on the highway. 25mpg is "not bad" when you think of it as an upgrade from 19mpg to 25mpg, but when you look at the vehicle for what it is, you getting 25mpg out that vehicle is just awful. According to the EPA website, if you use their more stringent "new epa" ratings, you should be averaging actually 26mpg not 25mpg.

Should've gotten the 5 speed 2L mazda 3, at least that way you'd be averaging (according to the "new epa") 30mpg.

My 2000 Maxima gets about 27 at that speed, with AC on. However, put some city in there and forget it. His driving included 25% city, which could murder his average.

It sounds about right if you ask me. I get about 25-27 mpg in my GTI with a 40% freeway, 60 % city with A/C on. Thing is that the "city" roads here all are 50mph speed limit so its debatable if its really city or not. I do drive with a lead foot though, his averages sound just about right.

My car does 28MPG at 75MPH and 30MPG at 65MPH. I think that's respectable for a full size sedan that weighs 3,800 lbs. and has a 4.6L V8. I only have four gears, with one more gear I bet I could do 32+mpg.

Hell, I just bought a Lincoln with a V8 and I'm averaging mid 20s on the highway. My overall average (according to the computer) is 21 right now, mix of city and highway.

I'm loving that car by the way. 😀

Edit: iFX, is that the Ford 4.6 V8? What kind of car? That's what I've got in the Mark VIII, the DOHC version. Great engine.

I only averaged 25 b/c of bad driving. I did a ~50 mile commute today and held it steady at 72 and the computer showed ~31 mpg. So it's just me getting angry at the fat Mexican girl in her Scion doing 55 in the left lane, then dropping a gear and zooming past her. Not the car's fault, just mine.

@BoberFett

Crown Victoria LX-HPP (Handling and Performance Package). Great car, eats up the highway! Mixed driving I do about 24 mpg. The last straight city tank I did was driving family around Orlando for a week. That was 21 mpg.

Love those Marks, shame Ford quit making then. The DOHC 4.6 is an awesome motor!

If you think thats bad driving now, its soon going to become your normal way of driving. Personal experience here

1/4 tank left, averaging 29.8 mpg

I get like 29 mpg in my miata 60% highway, 40% in town. Sooo slow... I look at V6's and their smoothness and the weight they carry and see they get similar MPG as my car.

Makes me think I should get something else

I had the same problem, My volvo got 18 mpg and my new Forester only gets 22 mpg so the trade in value was only $3500. If I had gotten the FWD Jeep Patriot I would have gotten the full $4500, but they were all sold out in my area.
