Cloud ??????

O.K. I've been ignoring references to "Cloud computing" as it was some far out experimental thing that some few geeks were trying. Now it's being speculated as a component of the coming Windows 8 - just what the heck is "cloud computing"?

Yes cloud computing is a major part of windows 8. Cloud computing is basically keeping everything stored on a server somewhere with your pc acting as a terminal . I think when MS tries to go with cloud computing for most of the software , that is when I will completely switch to linux.

Definitions of cloud computing vary, but it basically boils down to using computing resources that sit on the public network. That doesn't mean everything has to be out on the "cloud" with your PC acting as a dumb terminal.

For example, you might have a spreadsheet that manipulates stock data according to your own calculations, but retrieves the raw data directly from the 'net (without you having to download and convert it).

If you're a gamer, steamworks is effectively a cloud. Your PC runs the game, but gamesaves are stored on Valve's computers.
