Cloud storage terms

Amazon Cloud Player terms of use:

"5.3 Security. We do not guarantee that Your Files will not be subject to misappropriation, loss or damage and we will not be liable if they are. You’re responsible for maintaining appropriate security, protection and backup of Your Files."

... but I thought embedded in the idea of cloud storage is for a user not to worry about backup since physical storage is decoupled (i.e., virtualized) from the user device. So, how are you supposed to backup data in a cloud? Upload it to multiple cloud storage services? Hah.

Can you create a hidden Truecrypt volume in the cloud? 😀

Sounds like the usual clauses though:
"If anything goes wrong for any reason, it's not our fault."

It's like Carbonite or any other backup service, really. They will do their best but cannot be held liable for losses. There's just no way for them to possibly be liable and have any idea at all about what risk they are exposed to if they took on such liability. Think of it as the police, who will try and protect you, but make no guarantees.

only an idiot trusts mission critical documents *entirely* to another company.

Our school district is moving completely away from MS office and local storage and exclusively to google apps. The district admins keep insisting that since it's free it's a good idea. They also think it will allow IT staff to be cut since we don't need in-house servers.

I personally can't wait until something gets leaked so they stop being so cheap with critical shit. I've already found a flaw in google apps where if someone doesn't log out of their account, the next person on the computer can go right back in. This only occurs on our google apps educational domain, and we have spoken with Google apps support and they state that they aware and not willing to fix it. The workarounds they give us are to disable cache and cookies on every machine lol.

I really hate this obsession with cloud storage.

And you're entirely dependent on a stable and fast Internet connection.
Maybe that would be workable in Japan.
You want stable Internet in the US? I recommend that you have ISDN, dual T1 lines, and a satellite connection too. Or else set up shop right next door to an Amazon datacenter.

(This cloud thing suddenly struck me as familiar: Mainframes and workstations.)

But hey, it's media-hyped, so it's gotta be good. 😀

Any true backup plan follows the 3 - 2 - 1 rules.

3 copies of all data ... on 2 different media (Hard drive and perhaps optical storage) ... with 1 copy offsite.

I use cloud storage for my offsite backup, with the understanding that if the offsite failed, I would still have 2 copies and could re-establish the offsite at the same, or another cloud supplier.
