If you don't wanna spend the cash at Gap or whatever, you can try department stores. They tend to have a buncha sales, and it's real tough to go wrong w/ khakis and a polo of some sort, which just about any store carries. Unless you really care (or think others care) that your pants are Brand X or something.

Hi. I'm a dork.

For most of my waking years, I've lived in jeans & a T-shirt, changing them as required.

I'm going to a wedding in New Mexico over the summer, so I've already started getting some decent clothing for that.

I need to start dressing better, on a day to day basis.

So, where does one learn how to dress one's self well?

fashion emergency.

Not so much an emergency. Two and a half months till wedding, and I've got enough 'good' clothes for that. Dark slacks and a blue oxford button down shirt. Looks pretty good - and I checked with real people on that one.

find a TRUSTED female friend. head to the mall.

if you have the money and you just want to dress nicely, banana republic and jcrew, maybe express for men but some of their stuff can get too trendy but it may get cheap.

you can also try dept stores on weekends during their massive sales.

know what you want to do. if you still want to be comfortable, wear khakis, polo shirts, button down shirts. if you want to keep some jeans around, get some plain colored tshirts, some nice long sleeved shirts. you'll probably need a nicer jacket eventually also.

as for the wedding, you don't have to wear a suit? at least get a tie with the shirt and pants??? (ross has all of these things cheap, the bf got some NICE button down shirts and very nice slacks at extremely good prices, and ties there aren't that bad. another place with all designer labels is loehmanns but they're pricey at times)

I had to upgrade my wardrobe when I finished college. Recommend Gap and Banana Republic for a lot of stuff, like khaki's and shirts. Just wear jeans less and wear cloth pants with button down shirts if you want a nice upgrade. JCrew is nice too. Don't be afraid to wait for sales, you get better bargains.

Also I recommend going to the independant shops in your city, the ones where you can get something that is more original. If there's a gay area in your home town go there, you'll see some nice guy clothes.

What they do in Europe is buy some clothes, not a ton, but the clothes are high quality. In addition they accessorize well, like nices watches, shoes, glasses, etc...

What I also do is I pay attention to what the trendy people are wearing. I do it on the subway.

I second looking at the back for men's magazines for tips. FHM and Maxim, while trashy and tend to piss off women, are good to have around b/c they are both funny and their clothing sections are good.

But remember you can have nice pants and shirts, but it doesn't mean much without nice shoes, watch, and your demeanor. It helps to be in shape too heh.

Damn I feel like a wuss for writing that. Go Bears! How's that for manliness.

my rules for casual fashion:

the first thing you can do is don't wear baggy t-shirts. nothing looks worse than a baggy t shirt. in fact, the tighter the better (up to a point). also, 60/40 blends look much better than 100% cotton shirts, in terms of movement and showing your body and stuff. only problem is you're much more likely to stink in a blend shirt, so don't forget that deoderant.
next thing is shoes. unfortuantely, although nikes and reeboks are uber-comfortable, they look like ass and always have. get some chuck taylors, or puma/addidas soccer style shoes. they key with shoes is to avoid bulk and plastic. otherwise you walk around looking like the kids in the future in Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey. use gel inserts to avoid beating your feet to death in those crappy shoes.
lastly, pants. you're doing ok here. jeans are still cool. if you're thin, 501's are good. if you're less than thin, 550's. also, slacks look great with a fitting t-shirt and the above shoes. cargo pants were only cool 4 years ago, stay away from those, besides, they go against our "no bulk" mantra.
for outer wear, a zip-up sweatshirt rocks and is cheap. again, baggy is not allowed. peacoats are cool, and they haven't been too overexposed yet. these can be bigger, since they are cut that way to begin with. jeans jackets look cool when you're standing up but when you sit down, you'll expose plumber's crack to the whole world.
for shirts, you can always find neato blended shirts at thrift stores, but not everyone likes that look. a good alternative is jockey's t-shirt undershirts. they look great as a normal old shirt, fit nice and stuff.
for hats, baseball hats are cool if you wear them like a normal person and keep the bill curved to match the width of your head. beanies are cool. or try something off the wall, like a bowler.
oh for socks, plain white socks are fine, but also get some black socks. black socks can make a big difference in the look, usually for the better.

yay.

GQ magazine? only if you want the european look... which doesn't exactly go well with everyday wear.

Get a girl (who you think has good taste) and go shopping.
