I didn't quite get the reason for Closer's critical acclaim. It's one of those movies that tries too hard to protray just how "complex" and "multi-layered" we humans are in our views of love and loyalty, but comes across as being a tad trite and boring. I'm giving it three stars just for Clive Owen's performance.

this comes to mind: "just because nobody understands you doesn't mean you're an artist."

Most critically acclaimed movies are supposedly "deep" ... they are also slow and boring.

Having been in a serious relationship I found the movie spot the-fvck on.

And Portman as a hot-for-cock stripper....well... :p

it was my favorite movie of 2004, i think it's the breakup scenes that do it for me. the natalie/jude breakup is so close to how all my breakups go it's mesmorizing

Give us some perspective here Spooner, which relationship movies do you prefer over Closer?

The dialog is what makes the movie great IMHO. It was one of my favorite movies of 2004 along with Garden State.

I love this exchange:

Larry: Did you do it here?
Anna: No.
Larry: Why not?
Anna: Do you wish we did?
Larry: Just tell me the truth.
Anna: Yes, we did it here.
Larry: Where?
Anna: [points] There.
Larry: On this? We had our first fvck on this. Did you think of me?

...

Anna: We do everything that people who have sex do!
Larry: Do you enjoy sucking him off?
Anna: Yes!
Larry: You like his c@ck?
Anna: I love it!
Larry: You like him c@ming in your face?
Anna: Yes!
Larry: What does it taste like?
Anna: It tastes like you but sweeter!
Larry: That's the spirit. Thank you. Thank you for your honesty. Now fvck off and die, you fvcked up slag.

And this exchange at the end :D

Larry: You still pissing about on the net?
Dan: Not recently.
Larry: I wanted to kill you.
Dan: I thought you wanted to fvck me.
Larry: Don't get lippy.

I've had conversations like that before in real life.

Agreed, NFS4, it was the dialogue (particularly given by clive owen) that upped the movie from 2 to 3 stars for me. I'm beginning to really like this guy.

Conversely, quite sick of Jude Law

He's such a pu$$y, particularly in Closer. He's like the 3rd woman in the movie...

However, I still liked his performance

Er, I think that was how he was supposed to be. The character was a puss, and he did a good job of being one.

If it weren't for Natalie Portman scantaly clad this movie would have been a complete waste of time.

She wasn't very good or very believeable as a stripper in the movie. She was very robotic in her movements and she seems to step and walk around like it was the first time she was ever in heels.

That being said, Natalie in a thong = boner
