That's like suggesting that a larger hard drive has to be faster because it's bigger - it makes about as much sense 8)

If you aren't using 1GB of RAM, increasing it to 2GB gives zero performance increase. Windows doesn't page stuff based on if you have 500MB free or 1500MB free.

In a lot of cases 2GB will be slower than 1GB - particularly if it's made up of 4 sticks of memory. This isn't a fault of the memory itself, just an issue with motherboards and memory controllers. The rise in popularity of packaged paired dimms is mostly driven by the difficulties of getting multiple sticks of memory working at aggressive timings - it's hard even for just two, let alone four.

Exactly. It's just fast temporary storage space. Many folks seem to have a mental block about this based upon experiences when RAM was expensive and the average system never had enough. Enough is simply enough! And there's no friggin' guessing involved since Windows shows what the peak usage has been.

Commit Charge Peak versus Physical Memory Total under Task Manager Performance shows how much is required to prevent paging.

Actually it can increase performance, even in the presence of paging. Paging can lead to an increase in overall performance, no matter how much RAM you have, as long as it's not thrashing. More RAM = more disk-cache = more performance.

As someone who has 2GB of ram on my system. The only benefit i see from it is multitaking. My game habits kind of take a backseat to overall system performance (i still have a GF4 TI 4200 128MB). Though I really dont see a boost in gaming speed at all.

But at least i can leave all my apps running while i fire up a quick game of Doom3, UT series, etc; and the games have dedicated an extra 1GB+ free for their use.

The only benefit I can see going from 1GB to 2GB is the ability to open 20 apps at a time instead of 10. A cheaper solution would be to get a prescription for Ritalin.
