Please vote and post your opinions from experience as these cards are dropping in price. Some of us who are upgrading are torn between the two. If you state either card please specify brand and model.

better for what? the only real argument that could be made is in the area of drivers regarding specific game issues (the ati seems to have more, but they both have issues, and not every user experiences even the "common" issues), and then it's more a matter of how willing you are to wait for a patch or find a workaround. however, overall driver stability from both sides has been shown to be pretty decent.

at any rate, it's pretty much been shown over and over that at the same pricepoint, the 9800pro offers better overall performance and a better overall feature set... so what's the point in beating a dead horse? drop the cost of the 5900u about $50 lower than the 9800pro, and you have some interesting arguments... but really, it's pretty clear ati won this round (and the one before), and until the next gen cards are out in a short time, this argument is rather passe'.

either card is a good choice depending on what's most important to the person who is buying it, and from most of the pre-release hype surrounding the nv40, it's a safe assumption that neither of these cards will be anywhere close to the performance of the "next gen" cards, at least if you buy into the hype 🙂

 
The ATI 9800 is faster and has better overall image quality. The r300 core has been spanking nvidia for over a year now, they caught nvidia off guard. If you got time wait for the next cores to come out nvidia might take the lead again. At the very least prices will drop on the 9800 when the r420 and nV4x come out.
 
I am an nVidia bitch 🙂 (like I am with nintendo)

Ever since my first Geforce.. nVidia has me sold.. The detonator driver set is just plain awesome.. And if by chance the current release is unstable or poor performance for you, rollback or find a leaked beta set.

But having no first-hand experience, I can't say for sure.. I just like nv cards 🙂

True there is the nvidia driver benifit. In Windows and especially in Linux nvidia is king of the driver. I guess it is a trade off but if you are using Linux you must go nvidia.

I am totally satisfied with this product, the only problem I had was the Call of Duty crash caused by fastwrites and cat 3.9 driver's but there was a work around. I play all my games on quality setting 4x AA 16X AF except for Halo No AA and 16X AF.
My father-in-law has the Eva 5900 Ultra and he can only play 2X AA 8X AF

Yes folks, even though there's no way possible Havoc hasn't read 854,329 threads on this very topic and knows every nuance of every answer in his sleep, even after ingesting half a bottle of Vicodin washed down with beer, 1ManArmy charges to the keyboard and trots out the venerable "ATIs AA/AF are more efficient" chestnut. (kind of like TNT playing "The Christmas Story" all day long on Christmas every year)

That's kind of ironic, seeing as how havok is the one wasting his time, there are already NUMEROUS threads about this same topic, and in all of them, there is no winner, just a bunch of flame wars between fanboys
