However, the last couple of years I used Samsung drives and cloned them using Samsung Data Migration, and it gives the option of manually changing the partition sizes from the default recommendation. So I didn't have to do anything after cloning the drives.
This. Just another reason why I use Samsung drives. I cloned my last spinner to my 850 EVO with a clever external USB dongle, and the migration software, pulled the old drive, installed the Sammy and never looked back.

For some reason, I can't boot into the 'bootable' Acronis'15 CD. Tried it 3 times... weird.

I'm glad I don't currently face an urgent problem that would also make me deal with an uncertainty about Z170 systems. Let me explain, no less offering possible insight.

I'd been using this old version 11 of Acronis Disk Director Update 2. The CD for it still works on systems through our Ivy Bridge. I tried to get the CD to boot on my Z170, but no cigar. Some intelligence from a web-search suggests that the choice of the Linux kernel for the bootable CD is the downfall for using it on my latest system.

But I know from True Image 2014 you had a choice of either Windows PE or the Linux-based CD. I tried to create the Windows-based version, but it wouldn't run for some reason. That is, I can't boot from it to use it. So it sounds like the same problem.

I think I'll force myself to install the Samsung bundled version (or was it Crucial?) -- and try to burn the CD. I would probably buy a license to the latest True Image, and I saw a 5-PC offer for some $30. Whatever I pay, I think I'll find out more about the bundled version and maybe post something back here.

That would be Crucial, Samsung has its own software that does the migration inside of Windows.

Samsung is/was(?) using NTI software for backup/migration, has this changed?

The EULA and code signature for the Samsung Data Migration EXE say "Clonix Co. Ltd", but my point was that it was not Acronis.

Crucial does Acronis, I checked that last month when I was shopping for the 500 GB SSD for my work PC.
