Cloning HDD

Ok so i want to clone my HDD to a Raptor 36gb.

Is their any freeware out there to do this?

also how easy it to do, I've never done anything like this before.

just pop both HDD's in and clone one to another and let the software do its job?

If you go to the Western Digital web site, under downloads, you can get a bootable CD version of their DOS tools (Lifeguard Tools) for free. One of the options should be to copy the contents of your old drive onto your new drive.

Can you use this to backup a drive?

If you buy an enclosure or external usb to ide adapter by Apricorn, they give you their software that can do backup/cloning. It's a simplified version of the popular Acronis True Image.

I just got a WD 640 to replace my 200GB Seagate 7200.8. I downloaded the WD Windows clone utility in advance to check it out. For some reason it thought my system wasn't fully enabled for more than 137 GB. WD recommended the DOS version, but that meant buying a floppy drive. So I downloaded Acronis trial version. Works perfectly for 15 days, haven't decided whether it is worth 50$ to keep it though. But the trial version is fully functional and easy to use, even for computer illiterates like me. I have seen some posts on Acronis' furoms about difficulties uninstalling it. But there are help threads for doing it if causes problems.
