Cloning a harddrive

Both the above work.

Also, if this is to be from one disk to another (not as a backup), most manufacturers have a utility available via their websites that will partition a drive and copy the data on disk to the selected partitions.

Either one is fine. And most hard drive makers, have a program you can download
for free at their web site which is intended to move to a replacement hard drive for
those of you that do not have Acronis or Ghost

Have used all of the above options plus a couple of others. Been cloning drives regularly since 1997 or thereabouts.

Today, I would rate Acronis TrueImage at the top for speed, accuracy, and overall capability. But - with these caveats. A lot depends on your OS. With Vista, I would use TrueImage 11 (and I do) but for XP I use TI 10.

And, I always create a bootable CD called a Rescue Disk and do it that way. With Acronis, that gives better cloning performance and a much better Linux-based interface.

Your HDD manufacturer probably has free tools that you can use, otherwise go with Ghost or Acronis (whichever is the cheapest)

Acronis if you have a single drive config.

Latest Ghost if you have a Raid for your boot-os.

I use both and on my latest machine I did a raid-0 for the OS drive.
Ghost was the only one that identified the RAID to be able to restore it.

Any new opinions in April 2008? Last thing I used was Ghost 2003. How do the newest versions of Ghost and True Image compare?

Ghost 12 vs Acronis Echo

My needs are for workstations only, not a server-based program.

I got a quote for Acronis, but they sell it with a maintenance fee as well. I was surprised to see that. I had to pay about $70 per wkstation license and about $20 more for maintenance per license. I'm not sure if that'll be an annual fee or what.

Any comments or links or whatever?

Thank you!

I can only comment on the Acronis True Image Home Edition. It simply rocks.

sorry I can't be of any more help.

Acronis, I think you can get it from Newegg for less than $50, not only will you be able to use the clone functions but you'll also have a nice backup solution.

DOS Ghost (as developed by Binary Research) is arguably still the most powerful yet simple. Command line useage can effectively automate the process for use by beginners which cannot be said for interfaces of Acronis products and such as, no matter how purty they are.

Also, it is queer how True Image is not capable of copying a partition and instead requires Disk Director. TI cannot fit on a floppy and garners further demerits by not being completely uninstallable from Windows so, ironically (and somewhat paradoxically), to keep a clean system it must first be imaged before installing even to create the Linux boot Rescue Disc. Reportedly, the company intends to release a thorough uninstaller but the issue has existed for years. TI also does not conform to current UDF standards (being limited to reading ye olde 2.01 sans index redundancy for both performance and integrity).

All that said, TI is handy for use with pre-installed Windows environments.

Depending upon one's needs though, there are a number of freebee proggies available these days, as said, which may be fine and usually better than the utilities provided by HDD manufacturers.

If you already have Ghost 2003 use it. Why pay for a new program ? ?
It will do the job just fine.
