When I worked in a restaurant we used something called "Lime Away". If you left in a pan for more than a few hours it would start to eat away at the metal.
If you have a local Wal-Mart, they sell something called The Works. It's a toilet bowl cleaner, but it works to remove lime and calcium deposits from the bathroom. And it's cheap too, under 2.00 a bottle.
Why futz around with chemicals and hoping it will work?
Take the thing apart (it's not that hard) and use some small instruments to clean out the gunk. WAYYYYY more effective than waiting for chemicals to dissolve it.
