Hello, My name is Couhonou and I thinking of upgrading my mobo and cpu.

I would like to know. Clock for Clock how much faster are the i7's compared the Core 2's and AM2/AM2+/AM3 Athlon/Phenom II cpus?

I.E.

Core 2 Quad Q9505 VS Core i7 930
Phenom II X4 925 Core i5 760
Ahtlon X4 630

All chips are clocked at 2.8 ghz for fairness sake.
I've checked the THG charts but they don't provide enough relevant information.

Well it looks like most of the chips he wants to compare are not in that database....But I'd say clock for clock the wins go to the i series chips.

I have seen some comparisons comparing fiarly well paired CPU's and in alot of applications thats not always a true statement.

heres how it is in my head when it comes to single thread performance (no HT)

Core i7 8MB/12MB bloomfield/gulftown: 1.2750
Core i5/i7 8MB L3 lynnfield: 1.2500
Core i3 4MB L3: 1.200
Core2 1.5/2/3MB L2 per core: 1.100
Core2 512/1MB L2 per core: 1.050
Phenom II 6MB L3: 1.000
Phenom I 2MB L3: 0.915
Athlon II: 0.850
Athlon 64: 0.800
Core (1): 0.750
K7 512K L2: 0.725
K7 256K L2: 0.700
P3 512K Tualatin: 0.650
P3 256K Coppermine: 0.625
P4/Atom: 0.500

edit: added p3 class

does that account for clock speed differences ?

The i7 isn't much faster than the Penryn based Core 2 in a per clock basis, most of the i7 improvements are server oriented like larger out or order window, hyper threading etc. which means that its strenght relies on multi threading. It uses Turbo Boost and having an integrated memory controller also improves performance in single threading, but not enough to make a huge difference. Phenom II is slower per clock compared to Core 2 penryn, Phenom 1 is even slower than that.
