Can you buy extra cleats so you can use one pair of shoes for multiple bikes?

You will find that changing cleats out can be a HUGE pain in the ass. They allen heads fill up with dirt and small rocks and it can SUCK getting them out! You are better off just buying several pairs of shoes.

Word up. I personally don't like MTB pedals for long road rides (I use the Shimano "Lance" pedals for my road bikes), but if this is your goal, I would recommend going with Shimano SPD MTB pedals on your various bikes. People certainly do use these for epic rides, and they are great in that they allow for normal-looking shoes that don't require you to walk like a duck.

I think the next set I get will be Egg beaters.

Pro = four sided.

Con = none that I know of. ;)

I would be curious to hear actual user feedback on these. The design is elegant and featherlight, but I have to wonder whether they would work well for technical sections where you might want to be unclipped or partially clipped in (I know the latter sounds odd, but I intuitively do this when remounting on a technical climb sometimes). The initial reviews were very favorable, but users of weird pedals (like, say Coombe road pedals, or Aerolights back in the day) tend to be a little cultish in my experience, and I was a little skeptical of the way the big retailers ended up blowing out the Eggbeaters a year or so after they came out.

You forgot SpeedPlay pedals! :)

And you're right about people sometimes being "Cultish" about their pedals.
Though I haven't used EggBeaters yet, I do have several friend who do use them and I have gotten nothing but good reviews from them!

I use Look (clipless, duh) pedals on my road bike. If I had a moutain bike, I would probably get Shimano SPDs, because they were the original clipless mountain bike pedal (and Look made the original clipless road pedal... see a trend here? :D).

I would recommend the A.T.A.C. pedals and if you can still find them you should really look at Shimano "Lake" sandals. The clip area is recessed so the clip doesn't touch the ground much while walking. They are the best shoe if you want to be able to hike around when you get where you are going. Most of the shoes suck for walking but the sandals are great for both riding walking and hiking.

I have 5 or 6 pairs of shoes, one pair are Lake brand but they look just like tennys.

I got the sandals about 5 years ago. I haven't seen a pair like them since, but I haven't looked for them either. I just looked though and here is a link that has a picture.
