does anyone know the specifics why there is so much controversy about what the clintons took with them as gifts?
 
No other president in history has raided the White House for sooo much loot and past presidents have had respect for historical items.
 
Yes... just scan some of the bigger news sites and you'll find all the details (start here).

The short of it is, there are two seperate issues.

First, the ex-pres and ex-first "lady" (using the word loosely) took with them about $190,000 worth of gifts when leaving the white house, most of which were not meant for them (also known as stealing). They've agreed to pay back $116,000 to cover part of that, and are leaving some of the stuff where it is so the white house gift office can sort out who it belongs to.

The second is the whole issue of Hillary trying to bypass rules that specify how much senators can receive in 'gifts' by soliciting (and getting) tons of $$ and goodies just before being sworn in as a senator.
