I was expecting a gunslinging action flick, but instead got a dramatic tale of cowboys and their gritty lives.

That's most likely why you were disappointed. I liked the film because the characters actually had some depth to them--they were more human.

I thoroughly enjoyed Tombstone, but this movie just wasn't there for me. It gave a different perspective on the cowboy life and how you can never escape it, but still left me unsatisfied. Anybody wanna turn my "meh" into a "Wow!"?

Also, there was no mention of Ned as being black at all in the film. Was he supposed to portray a white man, or did everybody in the whole movie just not notice that he was black?

Go watch The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. That will get you your "WoW!"

There were two reasons for that: It's been years since a decent Western was out, and Clint Eastwood is a media darling. Especially then.
Don't get me wrong. I love Unforgiven. (Duck of Earl part cracks me up)
IMHO, I thought Open Range was underrated.

OK, maybe I was just a little harsh. Just amazed that someone didn't get what was an extremely smart movie.

From the media? From your friends?

I saw it in the theater, and the only thing I remember hearing is that it was serious but very good. I thought it was underhyped when I walked out.

I saw Outlaw Josie Wales when I was a kid, so I was kind of an Eastwood fan, but like I said, as good as he was (and he had some GREAT lines to deliver), I thought Hackman out-acted him. Little Bill is a fascinatingly deep/conflicted character.

Don't get me wrong. I love Unforgiven. (Duck of Earl part cracks me up)
IMHO, I thought Open Range was underrated.

I liked Open Range too, but it's more of a mood piece than a character piece, IMO.

Obviously it didn't seem to matter enough for him to cast Ned with a white actor. I also noticed the fact that Ned was black and that it wasn't mentioned in the film by any of the characters. It was rather refreshing to see that actually. Nobody calling him n!gger or any other derogatory remarks. Yet another reason to applaud Eastwood IMO. :thumbsup:

Great flick. They build Gene Hackman to be all bad ass, then when it's fightin time, Clint just goes apeshlt on Gene and his boys.

I think you are right on the Unforgiven vs. Open Range. The part before the shoot out always chokes me up. I feel more involved, or I can relate more. Unforgiven, is a thing I can only observe and say 'wow'.
