wherever you enlist, whatever your rank, whoever you are, whenever you joined...to the masses you are just a soldier.

I respect the marines, but they get labeled as the 'retards' of the military often as bravery is far less on the totem than profit.

a typical joke would be: They are called Marines, because they can blow a floater out their ass at any moment.

To the general public, who is largely ignorant maybe. Not to those who know the difference. Another difference between the Marines and soldiers. Marines is always capitalized.

Actually Clint acts more like a brother than Spike. He does have more kids from different women than Spike does.

He did use an Indian, like what happened in real life.

Also, the article in the link is wrong. The article calls the men who raised the Flag, soldiers. They were Marines, and one Corpsman. Marines are not soldiers, thats the army.

"Flags of Our Fathers" deals with the U.S. soldiers who raised the flag while "Letters from Iwo Jima" looks at the battle from the Japanese point of view.
The article writer, and Lee are both ignorant to the fact, that Marines, are not soldiers.

the military may make that distinction, but i guarantee you the civilian population, who handily outnumber you, does not 😛

That's because they are ignorant as well. Marine, soldier, sailor and airman.

It was edited out. Grow a thicker skin, it was humor. I put up with far more on these boards.

Wow lota hate for spike lee here. Leaving the current topic of the link aside I've never liked anything Clint Eastwood ever directed. He may be a legend but he's highly overrated as far as I'm concerned. Seems everything he touches turns to scar gold and gets %90+ on rottentomatoes. I've read several well regarded negative reviews of his movies that swim against the Hollywood suck up tide though that agree many of his movies just plain stink. On the other hand I know for a fact that Spike Lee has done some genuinely artistic film making in his day. Not sure if he's made anything in the past 10+ years that's good though.
Critics suck. Directors make movies that critics can't.

Clint Eastwood has forgotten more about making movies than Spike Lee knows.

Can't wait for Spike to do the bio pic on Al Sharpton. The "blowhard meter" will need re-calibrating.

It doesnt matter if they do or not. The fact is, we are not the same, and calling us soldier is wrong. There are many differences between us.

I think you need to realize that the term soldier is used to refer to their profession and that the Army's decision to refer to their servicemen as such is just another misfortune that you'll have to endure.

I know most people are ignorant to the fact that we are different. The correct term would be "troops" if you want to refer to all service members. I say this with no disrespect to army personal . BUt we are called the "few and the proud" for a reason.

There are many distinctions between us. A few are, every Marine is a rifleman. What that means is that, every recruit in boot camp, has to qualify with rifle. No other branch of service does this. Your MOS (job) dictates if you do or not. Admin, tailors, even cooks have to qualify. Also, we have to qualify on the 500 yard line, with iron sights. The amry goes only to 300, and thats from the prone. We fire from sitting, kneeling, standing, and prone. When in uniform, Marines are not allowed to talk on the cell phone while walking, walk and eat food or chew gum. Marines cannot wear their cammies out in public. If you ever see this, he is wrong, and should be corrected. The army does this all the time, I find it nasty. Every Marine Corps officer has to have at least a 4 year college degree, the only branch that makes this a requirement. Any Marine can join another branch of service, without going thru their bootcamp. All they have to do is put on their uniform. Every other branch of service has to go thru Marine corps recruit training, it doesnt matter if you're an E-8. You have to start at the entry level. Marine Corps recruit training is longer, and far harder than any other. The army has a "stress card" that you can flash if you're getting too upset. And they have to stop yelling at you. The Marine Corps has a sand pit the take you do, and thrash you. Worlds apart.

Those are just a few, there are many more. Again, no disrespect to any other branch, but we take pride

I write this a few hours before I board a bus, to a plane that will take me to 29 palms. To start my workup for deployment to Iraq. Fun fact: The army stopped training in 29 palms, because they deemed it unfit for human training. The Marine Corps bought it from them, and we use it to this day. Its pretty ideal for training, for the war in Iraq. Because its in the middle of a desert, with nothing but rock and mountains all around. Not that all of Iraq is like that, but where we are, it mostly is.

It's not about the whether or not the branches are unique. What I mean is that soldier has more than one definition. In this case, most people use it to describe one's profession, not their service branch. There isn't another word that I can think of that can succinctly convey this information. Perhaps the word fighter or warrior could suffice but that has a different connotation and usage, less professional than soldier. Plus, the armed forces have their own vocabulary. Would you get upset if someone asked you about your hat as opposed to using the word cover?

I don't care about Lee as a person, he has made some good movies.

Malcom X
Do The Right Thing
School Daze
Jungle Fever
Bamboozled

I especially like Do The Right Thing, he has made some outstanding movies regardless of how he acts in real life.

I don;t know... Spike Lee is a much better director than Clint and has put out better movies than Clint ever could. Spike let his politics get in the way of his brain on this one though.

well, this was false before you even thought about typing it....

Clint Academy awards won (director): 2
Nominations: 4
Best Pictures won: 2

Spike Lee Academy Awards won: 0
nominations: 2 (documentary, and one for short)
He was nominated for several golden palms for jungle Fever, but that and a few Golden Globe nominations are about it.

In every way that their industry awards achievement and gauges talent, Clint Eastwood demolishes Spike Lee. I like some of Spike's stuff, but he can't even shit on Clint's lawn.

That's why you're a marine. But you're still a soldier.

Oh, i didn't realize that quality was rewarded through Golden Globes and Academy Awards, etc. You really think that those awards mean much? hehe

Ask Morgan Freeman if Clint Eastwood is racist.

Definitely Clint 1, Spike 0

"black film" director

What is a niche "black film" director and lee films have heart and does better then some big budget films.

One reason so few WWII movies have black soldiers in them is because war movies about truck drivers and cooks are boring.

Any man, black, white or purple who served in WWII has my utmost respect, but I am not going to go making movies about Dolemite storming Omaha beach.

edit: Just saw the post above about Red Ball Express. Can't have sucked if Sidney Poitier was in it...

You're right. No one thinks awards are worth anything. Not even Kanye. If only there were a way to give recognition to quality work in the entertainment industry...
