6MB , that is not a well thought out distributed client, a 6mb upload is not "invisible" to the user , even if they are on DSL/cable.
But for those of us that feel that it is a project they want to work on, more power to you!

8% through phase one here - started last night. First DC project that I care enough about to bother making the effort...

The visualizations are nice - maximized it makes a decent screensaver.

Woah, what system are you running that on??? That's like not just surpassed it by a little or fair amount, but just blown away my Athlon 1.4GHz.

The total size of this upload is about 6MB. A window will pop up giving a large amount of detail about how this upload is progressing. The files are broken into small bits so if your connection is lost mid-transfer, it can pick up from where it left off when you reconnect.

It's not too bad because you can disconnect and reconnect later and the transfer will continue where it left off.

How long will it take?
This depends on how fast your machine is and how often you switch it off. A 1.4 GHz machine will take about 6 weeks if it is left running all the time. An 800MHz machine will take almost take twice as long. A 2.8GHz machine under 4 weeks.

Thats some serious processing power required!

I've decided to put SETI on hold for a few days and I've downloaded the ClimatePrediction client... I'm currently 2.78% through phase 1 (of 3). It looks pretty interesting, it will sure be nice when they make the additional client available which gives much more information about your simulation.
 
It might take 6MB to upload...but assuming u run a 1.4 ghz Athlon thats 6 weeks and if ur running a 2.8 that's around 4 weeks worth of work...so that's quite a lot of work to upload 🙂

I wonder why it doesnt upload gradually over that time period.... is it all come together at the end, or is it just so you can remain offline?
 
They say you can upload over a period of several sessions, but you probably wouldn't be processing anything during that time. I wonder how much you have to download per work unit?

how would stats exactly be computed if there is an upload every month or 2 months or so?

I have not read completely through the site so correct me if i am wrong but the developers need to make the program a bit more stats friendly to get a larger pool of crunchers. This sounds like a very neat program!
Just wish i had the horse-power to run it

I'm using the (previously underused) gaming rig in my sig/profile. 1.6 P4 @ 2.2Ghz 512MB RAM. I'm at 15% of stage 1(of 3) now. It's going to take quite a few days per work unit at this rate, but it doesn't feel unattainable.

I think I posted the first after-release AT thread about ClimatePrediction.net here, but I posted in the wrong forum (I forgot this forum existed).

I've been running it since yesterday lunch time (i.e. 19 hours), currently at 9.29% of stage 1...as it stats in the FAQ I think it will take around 4 weeks CPU time....once I've completed my first model I'll then decide if I should stick with or it or return to Seti.

 
I heard on BBC Radio World Service last night a program about this ,interesting project🙂 ,but to do it on dialup you'd have to be a real enthusiast!:Q.

Btw they mentioned that it could be run on a PC upto 4yrs old! ,are they having a laugh or what!?.
If it takes about 12 weeks for an 800 rig imagine how long it'd take on an 500MHz rig! ,even worse if its on a K6-2 500!

i threw some ghz @ this project
my work computer a p4 1.6 has been crunching since the 12th. i think its around 35% complete.
i put my 2100+ @ 180*11 on this too since friday evening its around 50% complete.
although im gonna start splitting time with DF and CP on this box.
how long did seti WUs take back when it started?
i started seti in 99, gui would take like 36 hrs on my k6-2 400 and around 24 hrs when i discovered TA and the CLI and added some quality RAM, IIRC.
now, WUs are down to sub 2 hr times.
just think in 4 years how much time it will take to do a full model of CP.
it blows my mind. what do you guys think?
im thinking in 4 years, its going to take probably a week or less to do a full model run(all 45 years).

Nah, when I had dial-up I downloaded a 80mb game. 6Mb isnt that big even for a dial-up.
 
The client appears to upload at about 11,000 timestep intervals. My best guess is that there are 750,000 timesteps in my current workunits.

Good question.... I shall try to figure out the speed of the client of the client on my machine at least and see how many steps/hour an Athlon can achieve per MHz.
 
OK, have the speed of an Athlon: 0.393 steps/hour/MHz

I dunno, I think the client gets a little slower the further it progresses (or maybe its just me) in the model.

I dont think thats correct, eventhou its feels that mine goes really slow it does go faster that 636/hour (1619Mhz).

I get 549/hour, but note I did a calculation of steps/hour/MHz so it can be figured for other CPU's. If you do the same for your result, the time also rounds off to 0.393 steps/hour/MHz.

Your K6-2 rig was only very slow at SETI because the K6-2 had a very weak FPU & its L2 cache only works at FSB speed.With a PII you could knock off about 40-50% of the WU time!
When I started SETI in October 99 (2mths after I got rid of my K6-2😉)I had a Celeron 366@550 ,it was doing WUs in about 10hrs on v1.06,about 8.5 hrs on v2.0 ,also back in those days the GUI was hardly any slower than the CLI as long as you minimised the window or enabled 'blank screen' for the SS.
Of course back then the Cel @550 was a top end cpu 😉

So we are comparing 3-4 weeks for 1 'WU' on a highend rig for Climate to 10-15hrs in the early days of SETI😛😉
Anyway ,I still think Climate is a good project ,but you really needed to be patient/& or dedicated

Yea it probably takes 15min. with prices like 2 cents per minute that would be too expensive since it takes at least 4 weeks to process one.
