Climate Prediction is ready for BOINC

Something tells me that those who unknowlngly choose the CPDN project when BOINC comes out without knowing that the WUs can take months might drop DC in general like a hot potato. In FaD right now, people are clamoring for smaller work units as people who have quit FaD have said "I don't think I'm doing anything/get bored when the work unit doesn't finish in under 12-24 hours."

That's something we deal with in F@H all the time. People who are used to the relatively computationally simple SETI WUs get all upset when they don't think they're getting as many WUs for their CPU time with the much more complex F@H WUs. In reality, a lot is being done, but it's distributed in larger packages, and the computation makes a lot more in volume of results (especially noticeable if you watch how long it takes to upload a F@H WU on dialup vs. a SETI WU).

While I have no problems with WUs that may take a few days to a week to complete, a lot of stuff can happen in two months that could cause loss of work (not the least of which being the necessity of reinstalling the OS for whatever reason, or a power failure that corrupts the work). Needless to say, I think it is not wise at all to package the work in chunks that large, but whatever floats their boat, if they can get people to crunch it...

In the past I've avoided those projects that took a long time to complete work units. But I've noticed lately that with Seventeen or Bust, although it can take a week or even a month to complete a work unit, because I can complete several "intermediate blocks" per day I don't get bored. I wonder if BOINC could be configured to accept intermediate blocks, basically just stats status reports with no bulk of data, to keep the users and stats addicts happy?

Climate Prediction in its current form sends an update to the server every 10,800 timesteps which is about 7.5 model months. My faster computers do about one update every ~8 hours.
