Client wants 7800 GTX *now*.

I have a client thats hard pressed for a video card and wants the top of the line. With the upcoming unknown on the 11th, is it relatively safe to tell him in all honesty that the prices on the GTX will drop? Or should I simply order now (he wants it overnighted FYI) but tell him I heavily suggest waiting?

I've been attempting to be extremely diplomatic about this, however this is one of the individuals who would probably pay $800 to buy one locally, so should I just bite the bullet on trying to save him cash?

His fault he didnt research IMO.

Just order it. The Ultra will be lucky to garner another 10% anyway, and it seems like money isnt an issue.

It feels like some type of computer sin. =(

I honestly don't think they will drop immediately regardless, however being educated as to hardware events and changes putting in an order for a 7800GTX two days before what may possibly be the release of the next line just feels.. dirty.

Why would the price on the GTX drop? I highly doubt the Ultra is going to be released on the 11th... Pretty sure its only going to be the GT.

If the MSRP on the 7800GTX drops by $100 on the 11th that will put it @$500- the boards are already selling far below MSRP and can already be found(as linked above) for less then the $500 point nV would be likely to move to IF the Ultra was going to hit.

If the Ultra was going to hit on the 11th the OEMs would already know about it and would be moving their inventory and prices accordingly to prepare for that- I doubt we will see any major price shifts partciularly since the GTX is already ~$120 cheaper on the street then MSRP.

You warned him thoroughly, right? This will teach him a lesson in patience; either that, or he will have demonstrated that he is beyond caring about price. And if he gets bitchy about it, tell him you warned him. Any way you look at it, your hands are clean.

I did my best. =/ However, as mentioned, I suggested the step-up program to him and he really didn't seem to care. Ordering now.

Of course I was talking about street price on the GTX. Who in there right mind would look for a card still selling at 599? when $480 has been seen numerous times.

You are right though they could have been moving stock out for the Ultra to come out, but I don't know why they would release it before R520 comes out.

Oh well, if something good comes out on the 11th, just say "your fault"

On the 11th, nVidia is releasing a 8800GTX with SM 4.0 :Q

Suddenly, your SM 3.0 card is no longer future-proof! 😀

This eVGA isn't too bad with BF2 for $530, and eVGA now has a "lifetime" warranty and also the step-up program (which I guess applies to this).

Apparently nV will simply announce the three things they have that ATI don't on the 11th: SM3, HDR, and SLI. If they do announce or release a new card, I don't expect anything other than a 7800GT. I wouldn't count on seeing an Ultra (if it exists) until after ATI launches R520.

A $100 price drop so soon, with no competition in sight? Highly unlikely.

Edit: Um, a link to the eVGA might be helpful, self.

Lol, even i find that funny. 😀

I would probably pee myself

Let him know that it may be a lower price later, but he seems like he has a lot of money for overnight and all. Just let him know and work from there.

It's hopeless. By the time I finished explaining why it was better to wait I had semi educated him on SLI, so now he wants me to order *two* of them. Immediately.

It's just slightly exasperating.

I suspect the only way you could make him want to wait is if you told him something faster was coming out on the 11th ("you know, if you wait a week, the rumor is there will be a 7800 Ultra..."). He obviously doesn't care about the money.

Of course, it is his money, and as they say, the customer is always right... 😛

Yeah, most of the time. Although having worked in retail for a few years I can certainly say that the customer is often times very stupid. 😉

Well all you can do is inform the customer of what you know. The decision is up to him. It seems like he is the type to spend a lot of money anyway so if he finds that 7800GTX SLI is too slow that he will get the 7800 Ultra/whatever that are going to call it anyway.

Why even sweat it. Just order his sli setup and be done, why should you care? He obviously doesn't....

I agree...and I also don't think he'll be too upset if gets stuck with 2 7800GTX's in SLI 😉
