ok, just wanted some rough info..

from what I read here on the forums the drives that are most common with the 'click of death' are western digital.. maybe I'm wrong but it's just my impression so far.

so is it me missing out threads or maybe it's just that because most people here have WD drives they're the ones you hear the most? anyone have an experience with a dead Barracuda?

thanks.

you didn't get my question :) what I'm asking is whether WD-s are more prone to damage and are more likely to die - since that's my impression from all the dead hard drive threads - that the WDs are dying more compared to Seagates for example.. never seen a dead Barracuda thread so far.

WD had the highest performing IDE drive so everyone got it. I run mine with the acoustic management enabled. I think it helps drive life with just a minor performance hit. You'll
only see the people who post about problems. Plus you can go to almost any store that sell computer parts. They'll probably have WD drives.

No, it's not only just WD drives. Lots of drives from lots of manufacturers crash, die and burn all the time. I used to have a Caviar drive that bit it like that. Also, an old WD drive, and a Maxtor drive. I don't remember which ones "clicked" like that, but they all died just the same, so I doubt if it is isolated to one manufacturer. I have a WD now, and it's hands down the best, most reliable drive I've ever had. If it dies on me one day, suffering from the click, I'll let ya know.

P.S. The "click of death" originally referred to Iomega Zip drives that, once the clicking noise was heard, would destroy any Zip disks placed inside it from there on out. Truely, the "click of death".

I hear a click coming from the back of my case...like on an off. Been doing this for months intermiitently. It's a Asus a7n8x deluxe with a antec 330 true, wd 80 JB...

Maybe the fan is doing something. Doesn't appear to be the HD. Or any other ideas?

My seagate is still working on my 1997 Amd k-6 system. Other than that, ALL the drives right now (IDE 100/133) are about the same. I got a maxtor, my bro got a Seagate - i cant tell a difference. Never has a drive died on me.
