Every day or so whilst the computer is loaded and in use i will hear a 'click- beep - click' sound which lasts for about 1 second in total.

The computer does not lock up or reboot during the click - beep - click but i really would like to know whats causing the noise.

System Spec: (nothing is overclocked)

P4 2.4b
MSi 845e Max
256mb Crucial 2100
Radeon 8500
60 gig IBM deskstar 7200
550 watt Q-tec PSU
MSi 52x cdrom
regular floppy

Thats all i have installed...

IBM hard drive passed the DFT from IBM's site but i obviously understand that this dont mean the drive isnt 'dodgy'

Has anybody heard of the noise problem im having?

Ive heard of an issue of deskstar hd's making some noises... Cant explain the beeping noise... What kind of beeping noise? System error beep? Internal beep?

Thankyou for the reply...

This is exactly what i hear... Click - beep - click

The 2 clicks are not as loud as the beep... its very similar to a POST beep but happens randomnly whilst the comp is in use.

I dont know if the problem is the hard drive... it may be anything else, i was kida hoping that someone may have experienced this problem or heard of it.

Do you have another harddrive you can try in place of the IBM? It's been a while, but I've read only bad things about Deskstars..

Well ive got an old 740mb knocking around somewhere which i know works... the click - beep - click has happened twice in 4 days (im on a diff comp at the moment cos i dont trust the beeping comp, i dont want to incur any damage)

Is it most likely to be the IBM thats the cause here and not PSU volts dropping or CPU throttling?

My temps seem ok and my volts seem ok but i only checked them in the bios not via a program.

Well, when my PSU's have failed, I usually hear the fans and hard drives spin down at the time of a power under flow, also in conjunction with a blue screen of death in Windows. It "could" be a power issue, as now we usually have so much RAM that as long as the RAM didn't lose enough power to reset it, most things will continue to work.

I'm bettin it's the deathstar ... er ... deskstar. I don't have one myself, but everything I've seen about them is that they're flakey at best... It sure sounds like the textbook "click-of-death".

Good luck.

Thx for the replies guys... i dont know if i mentioned this already or if its relevant to my problem but whenever ive heard the 'click - beep - click' the computer has continued to work perfectly with no lockups BSOD or reboots... i dont know if that helps you to narrow my problem down but i really appreciate your feedback on this.

If your board has system monitoring tools, verify them in BIOS. By that I mean check your temp, fan, and power settings, and make sure they are all within tolerances. I dont know what the click's are, but there may be a chance it's something being monitored, and the beep is to let you know something. You should also be able to determine in BIOS where the alarms sound... If you change it, and it moves, you know it's something in BIOS.
