Anyone know anything about these laptops? http://www.xoticpc.com

The resellerratings and reviews seem to be really good. I was looking at the studio 17 and XPS models from Dell, but I really don't like the video card options with them.

My budget is $1200 or so. My wife had an HP dv9000 17" WS and it was really nice until the motherboard or something went and now it won't turn on at all. She's basically hated the thing from the get go cause there was nothing but problems with it from the start.

my sis had that same hp, and the same problem.

she gave it to my bro, who found someone to replace the mobo and he never had another problem with it.

I just got the Sager NP5797 (the 17" version) for my birthday. It's a freaking badass machine.

Clevo is an ODM and designs laptops for the likes of Dell, Alienware, Voodoo and others. They are one of the top two or three in the world if I remember correctly.

You can buy their laptops from a variety of vendors. I got mine directly from Sager. It took about a week to ship and 3 days to receive. I need to post a review of it soon. Great machine though. The build quality is excellent. I posted my Windows 7 scores in this thread..

I ordered a 17" Sager from them about a year ago. To be honest, I returned it. I think the total time to delivery was two weeks or so? It was $2,000+ and had 1 dead pixel, 1 green and 1 red pixel that I couldn't "un-stick" using the massage or software tricks. I had a windows corruption within 48 hours and had to fresh re-install. Also, the webcam was absolutely terrible. Ended up with one of those Gateway FX's eventually (way cheaper, no dead pixels, and room for a second hard drive). For reference this was replacing an old Dell 9300 with a 7800 GTX out of an XPS.

Too many problems, but XoticPC did send a refund and ended up being OK about it. Probably was a one off, but my experience was not great with the machine.

I dunno, can't say I've ever used a web cam, so I can't tell you if the Sager one sucks or not. The Windows corruption problem is probably an issue with something you installed. They are tested before being sent out and I just can't seeing it "corrupt" all the sudden for no reason. I had no dead pixels with my 1920x1200 screen, so I can't speak to that.

Gateway is going to be a bit cheaper. It's using lower end parts though. I paid $1920 for my quad core (Q9000) w/ Geforce 280M GTX (fastest gpu on the market) w/ a 250gb 7200 drive and 4GB ram. I'm very happy with it so far. I've done some minor AVCHD editing in Premiere Pro (family videos) and the only game I've played on it is Fallout 3 (flawlessly). Windows 7 runs great on it and my performance scores were really good. All in all I'm happy with it.

Glad you got a refund. Sounds like your experience wasn't too horrible in the end. I've never used XoticPC, but i've seen a lot of people recommend them.

Cool guys thanks for the replies. I was really leaning towards Dell, but if these guys make laptops for Dell they must be pretty good.

My Wife's laptop is actually still under warranty so we're gonna get that fixed, but in the meantime probably also buy another laptop...all in all this might be the way to go then!

xSauronx - Good to know thanks! The mobo has already been replaced once, and the power supply twice now.

I bought a Sager 5720 from PC Torque, another Sager/Clevo reseller back in 2005. Excellent machine, though I've been looking at replacing it for a while now. Definitely won't get a 17in notebook again, they are just too large. 15.4in max, so I've been looking at the 8662 or the 2098. There's also a 14.1in Asus model I've been looking at. Wish I could get higher end video chips in 13.3in to 14.1in models though.

the only thing I haven't been too kean on is their pixel policy.

the 17" the wife has now is sweet. I dunno if I could drop back to a smaller screen now. Sure it's bigger and heavier, but damn it's nice, ha ha
