Cleartype

Why does cleartype look better on Vista than it does on XP? On XP it appears more smeared on most displays and has the appearance of a (CRT) with convergence problems. Are they using hardware?

I didn't notice any difference when I switched to Vista U32 from XP Pro SP2 two weeks ago. I never thought it looked back on Xp though.

I dunno how they do it, but it does indeed look way better in Vista.

Just another reason to dump XP (if you haven't already) 😉

I had to turn cleartype off when I migrated to Vista. It was terrible, and killing my eyes. I'm on a CRT, so I'm not sure if that's why I'm getting a different experience than everyone else.

I think you guys are being tricked. Aero + new fonts. Microsoft created several (I think it's like 6) new fonts for Vista. The default UI (menus, title bar, etc.) font now is 'Calibri' which looks quite a bit more elegant than 'Tahoma' (XP). It's especially designed for flat-panels if I remember correctly. Granted the GPU-driven desktop should be doing a better job at anti-aliasing and such, but the biggest reason for the visible difference is those gimmicks, IMO.

XP is the guest OS and I haven't tuned the ClearType on it. (neither have on Vista) I could see the Vista's default font is slightly stronger, which probably could be tuned under XP to the same. (I just quoted someone's post for the text in the Notepad. Hope I don't get charged for copyright infringement..) But again Vista's new fonts are certainly more attractive than those dry-cut XP fonts.

Microsoft has really nice ClearType fonts, but I have to turn ClearType off on my 216BW. It was practically impossible to view normal text, like on this forum, without getting a headache or something.

Cleartype definitely is for LCD's, not CRT's.

At least not from what I've seen so far.
