I remember seeing a trick where you could clear the list of "Hide Inactive Icons" in the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties. You had to edit the registry and it effectively disabled the option, but I can't for the life of me remember how to do it - any ideas?

What OS would be useful. Presuming XP here. I also can't tell if you're intending to disable the feature and leave it that way. Assuming you want to disable it, just right click the taskbar, Properties, Start Menu tab, Customize, and uncheck Use Personalized Menus in the advanced list. Same item for IE6. They used a different phrasing for OfficeXP so it's not as clear what you're disabling (since god forbid you use something different than what MS wants).

No, that's not it. It was a change made to the registry and it made the Hide Inactive Icons function in XP stop working altogether. It cleared the list and prevent any more from being created.

So why not just turn it off?

Sigh, nevermind, I'm mistaking the personalized menu and inactive icons.

This the one?

If it is, that's the exact same thing as just unchecking the box in the taskbar properties page. I don't know why people feel a need to make something seem magical and special when it's really just the hard way to do things.

No, sorry, that's no it. This fix had the effect of permently clear the icons already in the list and preventing any new ones from appearing.

I'd really like to find that fix...
