Clear CMOS before reinstalling Windows?

A minor overclock on the G0 stepping version. I have had this machine running since last November with no issues, but Im contemplating reinstalling windows. I have an abit IP-35 pro, have not changed any voltages just upped the FSB (9x333). I did this after installing windows. Are there any problems with leaving it OCd during the installation process or should I clear CMOS just to be safe?

If she's stable then installing windows while overclocked is just as OK as running windows while overclocked.

If your overclock makes you nervous enough to not want to install windows then you should be nervous enough to not run windows (after install) on the overclock.

I've trashed many a windows install with unstable overclocks. There's really no harm in it provided you know when to recognize an unstable overclock (and a trashed install) so you can correct the situation and do another reinstall.

Thanks for the quick replies and advice, I only did about an hour of prime95 tests with no errors. Which is a far cry from 24 (the only reason ive been worried) The machine has been stable as a rock, I haven't had a single blue screen.

I installed WinXP Pro on 5 Q6600 machines OC'ed to 3.3Ghz with stock voltage...so unless I got particularly lucky I'd say your 3.0GHz OC is going to be stable too.

installing windows while overclocked @ 3.0ghz vs stock 2.4ghz will not save you any time in windows install minus the time you spend in bios.

Goto Stock and then install windows. The last thing you would want was windows installing wrong, and having it fail your stress test to make YOU think you overclocking failed.

As said above, if your overclock is stable, there is no reason to ever go back to stock.

I definitely noticed the PAINFUL difference between installing XP Pro with my QX6700 clocked at 4GHz versus stock (2.67GHz). OMG was it f'ing painful to wait for the install to complete at stock.

Still though, there is some virtue in being patient and doing it the right way I suppose.

aigomorla is right, also. When I have to reinstall Windows XP Pro I put my E8400 back to stock 3GHz from its overclocked 3.91GHz just so I know there will be no problemks with the install. After Windows has installed an then put your overclock back on.🙂

If your OC isn't stable enough to handle the stresses of an OS installation process why on earth would you deem it stable enough to boot your OS after install?

There is some flawed risk-assessment/risk-aversion/risk-mitigation thinking at play here.

Now if you have NO idea whether a particular OC is stable because you haven't tested it yet from within a pre-installed OS then hellz ya you are foolish for attempting your first OS install on an unproven untested OC. That's just common sense.

what is the tollerance? 90% 99%?

I trust you in stability, but i dont trust everyone who posted in this thread, let alone the op.

Sorry no offense, my stress test methods are A LOT riggorus then most people. 😛

I would install Vista Even overclocked, cuz i know my machines are on the same ground as stock stable overclocked, but i dont know that in the OPs case.

4.0ghz vs stock is a big difference, but 3.0ghz vs stock is very tiny.
