Your going to get a lof of opinions mostly pro, some con. Those of us running Vista generally seem to be happy with it. I will suggest that its (for good or bad) the new mainstream platform you'll see the most support for over the next few years. I wouldn't run to upgrade unless you need the features, but if its a new rig, I'd run Vista (ideally Vista 64 if you plan on putting in at least 2gig and think you might want to add more later).

alright il check it out and debate whether its worth the hassle [though i htink i have xp on a partition so it shouldnt be much of a problem]

vista 64? is that something different then home or ultimate... or just a version of those
is there actually that much of a dif. between home or ultimate?

Simple fact:
You should install the only OS you have legit license for.

under the hood, who cares, install what "you" want to run on it.

If your is a simple standard machine with No special hardware, then Vista is the better choice

but if you have specialized hardware that still has no vista drivers/software for it yet, then XP is the better choice.

Now you choose what you want.

or simply like me, make it Multi-Boot-able, problem solved

now you can play in any OS you want.

Vista 64 referes to the 64bit version of the OS vs the 32bit version. Both Vista Home and Ultimate should be available to you in eitehr 32bit or 64bit Personally I run Ultimate on all my boxes, but it's frankly I'm too lazy to figure out if I really need feature X or not on each box and just prefer to have it all installed in case I do.

If your hardware has vista drivers then I would recommend going Vista. I made the switch a few months ago and haven't looked back.

It has been extremely stable for me. The only time I've had to reboot has been due to windows updates. It ran pretty good with 1 GB of RAM, but after upgrading to 3 GB it has been much better..

And I have to admit, I really do love the Aero GUI.

The summary you basically need is that with Vista 32 you'll be limitd to about 2.75-3.5gig of memory no matter how much you put in the box. With Vista 64 you'll be able to use upto 8gig or more (depending on the version you get). Even if you start with 2gig now, Vista 64 will let you add more later. With Vista32 if you add more later and want to use it all you'd have to reinstall Vista64, so I just generally recommend doing that from the get-go.

No, you'll want to specifically get the 64bit version when you purchase Vista.

i say it's a safer bet to get Vista 64 if you are going vista, since Vista 64 will also run your 32bit software

so you really got nothing to lose.

only people with Older hardware that does not offer 64bit computing, should choose Vista32, otherwise is like shooting yourself by going Vista32 when your machine is perfectly capable of going Vista 64

I don't run windows much....but if I did, I would get the latest release, as the long windows lifecycle means I would likely have to upgrade in the near future to keep secure/get support anyway.

If youre an enthusiast as your username implies, and you can deal with/are alright with a few incompatibilities or bugs, then vista all the way.

If the system is work critical and you must be absolutely 100000% positive that everything will work as it always has, and you're never going to put more than 3Gb of RAM in this system, ever, then use XP.
