cleaning white headphone wires

you guys know the white headphones that come with the ipod, well the white wire is getting a bit dirty. is there any way to clean this stuff off without hurting the wire?

they have a normal rubber coating right? as long as you don't use a solvent or something abrasive it won't hurt it. try a wet paper towell
