Despite my efforts to keep my family's greasy little paws off the computer screen, it still looks like it was licked by a bulldog after about 2 or 3 days... I'd go through those monitor cleaning towel things like crazy if I bought those... so I'm looking for an alternative... can I use rubbing alcohol?

Never tried rubbing alcohol may remove the anti glare coatiing.

I use glass cleaner srayed on a soft cotton cloth to remove those
remnants of little (and not so little) hands.

Switch off the power to the monitor, slightly dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water and wipe the screen clean , then with another lint-free cloth (this one completely dry) wipe again, clearing the screen of any streaks.

Micro Fiber towels work great!

Water doesn't remove greasy fingerprints. I've been using a glass cleaner, but it's gone, it was one from Henderson Glass that I got when I had some car windows tinted. It doesn't say what's in it, so I'm not sure what kind of glass cleaner to use, probably just something without amonia in it right?

Avoid window cleaners, especially those with ammonia.

yeah, you should try a microfiber towel. I got a 3M scotch Brite high performance cleaning cloth from compusa for about $7, and for me it solved the problems you are having.

Do you use that in conjunction with a liquid cleaner? Or just wipe the screen with that cloth?

It all depends on what type of anti glare coating that was applied to the monitor. Some have no effect on alcohol and ammonia while others will strip when alcohol or ammonia is applied.

I find that Windex with Ammonia-D will leave remnants of streaks. OTOH, Windex Multi-Surface with Vinegar leaves no streaks. :D I'm using an 17" Envision 770-e.

Actually, believe it or not, it works better when it's just damp with water than when using a cleaner. If it's just dust and a finger print or two, I'll just use it dry. It's designed to work either way. I've also used it with lens cleaner for eye glasses, but water works just as well and is more convenient.

yeah, but when you travel a lot and need to keep your notebook's screen clean, it's a pain in the ass to lug around a bottle of windex and roll of paper towels.

I used to do computer lab-sitting and we'd clean the monitors with windex w/ammonia-d and these great things called Kimwipes. They're basically gigantic lens cloths that come in boxes and dispense like tissue. Streak-free shine everytime. However, my personal monitor is a viewsonic and they recommend against using a cleaner with ammonia-d, so I use windex with vinegar instead. Now if only I had access to those kimwipes, my life would be complete...

My Viewsonic doesn't think it's nonsense, I used to think the same thing and have always used Windex, but now the coating on this monitor is bubbling up and peeling, so I use either water or a specialty screen cleaner on my other monitors. Also FWIW for my laptop I bought some LCD Screen cleaner wipes at Compusa and they actually took the oil film coating off the screen and almost ruined it too, so I bought the expensive Klear Screen for it and it works great. So just be sure you check what you are using, I am still bummed out about my Viewsonic.

How about a LCD screen or plasma? What on earth do you use to clean those?

Like I mentioned above this is the only thing I would use on an LCD but not sure about a plasma but I bet it wouldn't hurt, send an email and ask. This stuff is expensive but it works great.

Like I mentioned, the microfiber cloths used dry or damp with water are designed to safely clean LCD screens, but they work just as well on CRTs. I use the 3m scotch brite high performance cleaning cloth - machine washable when it gets dirty. I found it in the laptop section of comp usa.

If your screen is glass - any glass cleaner will work.
If you have an anti glare coating - use water (anything else will eat away at the coating)
If you have an lcd - use a damp cloth ONLY.

Pure ammonia will take off the antiglare too..
