cleaning cat's teeth

my cat's breath stinks - she prolly needs her teeth brushed.

it appears i'll need to keep her mouth open while brushing her teeth. so, i think i'll need to restrain her. how have you folks done this in the past? just wrap the cat in a towel? sedate her?

::note:: this is how medicine was given to my cat. there's some trick where you press the side of their jaw and their mouth opens up or something or other...

Or you could try retraining it between your legs.. and then brushing it with your hands.
My bro brushes his cat's mouth once a week.. I guess that's how he does it, since he always does it alone.

Keep in mind, if lots of plaque is present, you will not be able to get rid of it without some scraping. We've never brushed the teeth in our cats, but they've been to the vet for their cleanings. The cleanings at the vet do involve the use of anesthesia to put the cat to sleep before taking on the task. Plus, it isn't a cheap visit. Nearly $200 or so, from what I can recall.

crap...her gumline is fairly red. i think i will take her to the cat dentist first to clean up whatever build-up is there. then i;ll brush her teeth regularly afterwards.

My 17lb. Maine my excellent compatriot lets me give him a quick scrub from time to time, but he makes it clear he doesn't enjoy it. My fiance tried to do it once, the effort lasting all of 2 or 3 minutes and her losing about a pint of blood. They didn't 'speak' for a few days after that.

We just take them to the vet once every year or so for a thorough cleaning (vet puts them under).

We have a Siamese too, but I don't go near him too much. He carries a knife.
