I tried to install Windows 2000 off a clean format but it won't automatically start up

What is the folder and file I need to look for to install?

what do you mean by "it wont' start up". do you mean you can't boot off the win2k cd?

if you want to do a clean install without booting off the win2k cd, you'll have to make the 4 floppy win2k boot disks (there's a directory on the win2k cd to make boot disks from) and then load off those 4 floppys

don't get me wrong here, you're still installing off the cd. only difference is that instead of booting off the cd, you need to use 4 floppy's. the point is, you can't just boot off a win98 boot disk and run setup, you need to boot off the win2k - specfic boot cds...then installation installs off the cd as normal

did you check your bios setting to make sure that you can boot from cdrom (instead from C:, which is usually the default?)

i'm sure win98 doesn't have autoboot in the cd ... but win2k has that (at least in my case)

if your bios can boot from cdrom, but your cd won't load, i think sohcrates may be pointing you to the correct direction ... just use a floppy to go to the prompt, then run setup from the cd .....

Do you have a boot disk? You can use a win98 one if u have one around. Just boot from there and start pc with cd rom support. Then run setup from dos command and u should be fine.

you can't run win2k setup that way, that only works for win95/98/ME

from what i know, you need those 4 win2k bootdisks. inside the win2k cd somewhere, in the first subdirectory, there will be a "bootdisk" folder. run the bootdisk.exe file and it will prompt you for 4 floppies. just continue and create those boot disks. those boot disks don't appear to be of the win98/5 variety. they load a *lot* more, not just cdrom drivers. i think they also load win2k installation prerequisite files, i'm not sure on that.

no, you need to make the bootdisks and boot from them. it's not too difficult

The 4 boot disks are slow to use, just do what the other poster said, go into your bios and change the boot order to CD,C, A or whatever your options are there.
