Agreed, though brilliance is not exclusive to prog metal/rock.
I think there are probably also some blues and jazz musicians/composers too.

Aside from the inherent difficulty in finding something classical about the future, I'm going to point out that there are still many composers around the world creating new pieces. Operas, concertos, symphonies, etc. I've seen at least a dozen premiers in my lifetime, some in the US and one in Europe.

So, that's my vote.

That's where the speculation part comes in.

My vote is toward the electronica/techno/house genre, primarily because the music is "electronic". I'm thinking the future will have a lot of computer generated sound, and the beginners of this genre will be venerated as pioneers.

How was nixium's post speculation? hehe. Anyway, I disagree that computer generated music is the future, at least not on its own. The reason being that electronic music has been around for ages. Edgar Varese broke ground by composing "Poeme Electronique," which was all electronic/synthesized sounds. 50 years later, electronic music is certainly still around, but so is plenty of acoustic sound.

Were any of them good? Which ones do you like enough to strongly recommend as modern music of a high caliber?

Well the "classical" period of the "classical" genre is already well over. Similar music will always be in the classical genre, but the classical period (along with baroque, romantic, etc) are over.
