didn't we just have this thread?
I started off with a Pong and then an Atari 2600...so obviously my pre 2000 games list would be freaking epic

Yeah, my list started pretty much with Zork, so it is probably up there as well. I played Adventure, where the "Dragon" looked like a dead chicken. I played the original metroid. I actually completed Super Mario Brothers in under 5 minutes once. I played the original Pool of Radiance before there were hard drives. Played Archon. And the original chess master.

I remember when the original Unreal came out and thinking that it was so awesome. Absolutely no story line what so ever, but it looked great.

Played the original Tomb Raider (boy were her assets boxy). Anyone remember Pitfall Harry? Or Yars revenge? Or how about Mule? Awesome economics game.

Diablo, Quake 3, UT, Tomb Raider, AoE2, Half Life, among others. There were more but I remember these the most.

i always hated Adventure. never understood how it was popular. I also remember and still have Yars Revenge and its sequal (cant recall its name). I also have Seaquest and the Atari Flashback 2 Plus edition which was only sold in limited quantities to pre sales and included a T shirt.

I collect a lot of oddball game stuff, like candy tins that look like console controllers or game characters. But don't have the room to start collecting too much in the way of old consoles and games as much as i'd like to. I do regret not keeping all my PC game big boxes though.

This isnt all, but its what came to mind just now...

The Marathon Trilogy tops my list. This was the start of the modern first person shooting. Many of the things we take as expected today started with Marathon in 1994.

But I also played a lot of:

Bolo Played this *WAY* too much, including in tournaments. One of my top games ever, even today.
Quake World Clan Arena FTW!
Myth/MythII So much fun
Warcraft My first RTS!
Warcraft II Twice the fun!
Starcraft Three times the fun!
Diablo First Action RPG that I really played a lot of
Diablo II I lost years of my life to this game
Age of Empires I played this and later AOEII a LOT
Flashback Really enjoyed this game
Worms (The original) Nothing like blowing up friends!
Sim City Lot of fun
Sim City 2000 The best Sim City to date IMHO.

Wow, to so many "pre-2000" means "mid- to late-1990s".

Number Munchers
Sticky Bear
The Bard's Tale (Please Wait. Waking up the monsters)
John Elway Football
Hardball (as seen in 'The Princess Bride')

THOSE are "pre-2000" classics.

does Quake 3 count? Wasn't release date like December 1999?

You know, that's a good question. I always remember playing it back the 90s but that might be bad memory on my part.

edit Ha you're right, just did a quick Wiki search and it was Dec. 99. I could have sworn it was before that. Well, that was pre-2000 so technically it counts lol. I just liked playing it.

I actually loved 'Adventure' as there was actually stuff to unlock. Once you got the bridge, you could make your way into the secret room. And then I think you could do something else if you got the Gold Dragon in there as well (though I could be remembering incorrectly). And, for the time, it was pretty cool D&D substitute. Ok, it was crap, but "For the time and platform" it was cool.

I remember another really early low end graphics/text game. I don't remember much about it, but the corridors were green lines in a box. And every once in a while you encountered this elf who "Loved your body" and healed you up. it was one of those endless dungeon type games and I remember each level was progressively tougher. I got down into the 90s once and it was really tough. Balrogs kept on killing me.

Other early stuff I remember were games like Wasteland (the First Fallout game). The Gold box SSI games as well. Completed them all except Pools of Darkness which really kicked your butt if you weren't extremely careful.

and I remember vividly when the first Diablo came out. Played the demo for HOURS. My then girlfriend was really into it as well. I played Wizard and she played Archer. Man, lots of fun hours there.

It seems that I can only remember one title from before 2000 ... Homeworld.

if i remember correctly, the actual D&D game on atari was pretty far superior and different. i think it had a first person perspective...or at least some of it was.
But i honestly can't remember if it was on 2600 though. If not then i'd say your right since there wasnt much of RPG's that i know of on 2600 other than swordquest perhaps.

I played a number of games in the 80's but I was too young to remember the titles (and I think I played them on some sort of pre-DOS computer system; booting from disk was something I learned later on). Some of the names I can recall:
Pacman
Rampage
Lode Runner
Karateka
Prince of Persia

On the FamiCom:
Super Mario Bros
Tetris

Pretty sure they came out in the 80's and pre-date a lot of the 90's classics named in this thread.

MOST of my computing enjoyment came before 2000.
Just about anything you can think of for DOS 4.0 and beyond, I probably played. (Though I didnt like everything and some stuff I played for maybe 10 minutes and that was it).

I miss downloading demos and freeware and shareware over Gopher and BBS's. Good times. Getting a game to work properly on your system made it all the more worthwhile.

Some of my early favorites were Siege (by Mindcraft), Elvira 2, Legacy, some goofy car builder/simulator from a PC Gamer diskette, original SimCity, and well, a crapload I cant think of right now. Had I any sense I would have made a database of everything I ever played along with a brief synopsis and my own personal rating.

Now that GOG and other services are so common I might like to revisit some old classics.
