Classic bands sell out

The Who Sell Out

1967 Albums spoofs the idea of a rock band selling out to do commercials.
Ironically, the Who really have sold out and have at least 2 commercials:
Hummer ? ?Happy Jack?
Clarinex ? ?Overture? from Tommy

The Rolling Stones:
WindowsXP ?Start Me Up?
Coke C2 ?You Can?t Always Get What You Want?

Led Zeppelin:
Cadillac ?Rock?n Roll?

The Clash:
Jaguar ?London Callling?

The Ramones:
Cingular bah? I can?t remember the name right now

Marvin Gaye:
Radio Shack ? ?What?s Going On??

Who else has sold out?

(No body tell me about Third Eye Blind. I like their song, but they ain't classic yet.)

can't they come out with another term than "sell out" ? So sick of hearing it. I mean, WhoTF cares what else they're doing as long as they're still making THEIR music...

Oh come on! The Who used it in 1967, were you sick of it then? 😀

You forgot "Who Are You" as the theme song from CSI.

Nonetheless, half your lineup is dead, and the other half is starting to show its age. You have to pay the bills somehow. I don't really see what's wrong with capitalizing. If I could pick up up royalty checks for the songs I wrote 40 years ago, you can bet your ass I would.

Well, the Who made fun of bands for doing it, and then they did it.
The band themselves care a whole lot about it, which is precisely why it is ironic.

Well, those band sure did way back when.
Their music also has longevity.
Not carrign about the art and only caring about the buck is why we have bands like Millie Vanillie and Britney Spears.

They might have acted like it on the outside, but I don't think a single one of them bitched about any money they made plying their trade. Now Harry Chapin - there's a guy who put his money where his mouth was. He donated almost every cent he ever pulled into his cause celebre, World Hunger Year.

Milli Vanilli was awesome. It's a shame the real folks behind them won't come forward. They are actually AFRAID of the buck.

But people change. It's many years later. Bonzo is dead. Moonie is dead. The Ox is dead. Joey Ramone is dead. Keith Richards looks like he's dead.

The "keep it real" attitude wears off when you realize that keeping it real means being in the poorhouse.

They are in the biz for the money...

From Tool Hooker with a penis:

All you know about me is what I've sold you,
Dumb f*ck.
I sold out long before you ever heard my name.

I sold my soul to make a record,
Dip sh*t,
And you bought one.

All you read and
Wear or see and
Hear on TV
Is a product
Begging for your
Fatass dirty
Dollar

So...Shut up and

Buy my new record
Send more money
F*ck you, buddy.

Donovan has had one of his songs used on a GAP advert (in the UK at least)

Cool, what song? MelloYellow? Sunshine Superman?

Mellow Yellow i believe.

I saw There Is A Mountain on Top Of The Pops 2 about a month back, i still find myself singing that regularly!

First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is
First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is

Allman Bros, Radiohead and Bob Dylan have all had music used in commercials and/or TV shows.

Cool, what songs?

Allmans - 'Jessica' was in some Mini-Van commercial.

Bob Dylan - He was in a Victoria's Secret commercial singing a song. Not sure name of song.

Radiohead - "Everything in it's Right Place" and a couple others have been played during CSI.

Just can't think of any other off the top of my head right now.

Sh!t I even heard Patrick O'Hearn - April Fool in an "up close and personal" feature during the 1998 Olympics.

have you noticed the correlation between joe strummer's death (lead singer of the clash) and the song's appearance in a jaguar ad?

have you noticed the correlation between joey ramone's death (lead singer of the ramones) and the song being used in a cingular ad?

i mean right after their deaths they appear in ads.
makes you wonder if they were stopping that from happening when alive.

Slipknot is a long way from "classic" but they've definately sold out. When a metal/hardcore band appears on MTV, you can be sure they've sold out.

So if some large company came along and offered you boockoo bucks for a song you wrote, you wouldn't take it?

I'm so sick of people accusing artists of "selling out" :disgust: Seriously... if they didn't want to make money with their music, they would never have made a record. Selling muisic and rights to music is what they do....

Don't forget all the CSI themes for The Who...as well as letting Limp Bizkit bastardize their tunes.

It's not like they had any say in whether or not Limp Bizkit covered Behind Blue Eyes.

I have to say, I hate that the Coke C2 ads use You Can't Always Get What You Want. Just another song that I like a lot being ruined for me.
