No degree and make good money with no student debt.

That is one expensive piece of paper you guys have there...

I'd hire a guy with a college degree over a non-degree any day.

Conversely, I'd lay off the non-degree employees first.

Same goes with interviews and resumes. Resumes with degrees get first priority.

This means what to me?

Look at all the people who didnt step out into the real world because a degree was some sort of safety net. It is obviously better to have one, but if you interview like an asshole, or got some laughable degree (psychology?) you are going to be a waiter anyway.

Ah, yes. The scare tactic of suburban parents. "If you dont do your homework, you wont get a degree, and youll be flipping burgers!"

Your points are well taken, and it's obvious you aren't some moron spitting off at the helm

But, you still didn't answer the question. What do you do?

My guess is sales. It's one of those things were if you are good at it you can make a ton of bank for little effort and zero education. It's also one of those things that is difficult to teach.

I kind of want to go into sales. People say I have *that* personality.

But when I see jobs listed online, most of them involve some sort of cold calling. I wonder if that's standard. I worked as a loan officer 3 summers ago and I kid you not, I'd do 400-500 cold calls a day to people, trying to get their SS# so I could refinance their mortgage. Not exactly chomping at the bit to get back to those days.

Im a Senior Consumer Loan Processor and Contract Underwriter. I incorporated in 2008 so I have made it into a business as well.

Granted, it took getting a foot in the door making copies when I was 19. I just turned 25, and most of the people in my position that I have met are in their 30s+.

I was more just trying to get a reaction in a college thread with my original comment, so dont take it personal.

My first day I got 5 socials. Thought it would be a piece of cake.

That week I got 3 more.

In the next 2 weeks that followed, I got 4.

Then I quit.

But I was there long enough to see 2 refi's go through, netting me $3500. I was a sophomore at the time, and to have made that much in 3 weeks was fucking fantastic. I left because guys were snorting lines in the bathroom (I kid you not) and I couldn't do it full time while going to school.

Definitely did not. But, as funny as it seems, I know the kind of detail that underwriters have to deal with (more stuff I learned as an LO) so you actually have a damn good job that most people I know go to school to get.

Find a "real" job, or find any, suck ass/bide-me-over job?

None of you guys networked in college? I thought networking was one of the big reasons to get a degree. Somebody you went to school with had to have a foot in the door somewhere for you...

I graduated in 08 and am making $100,000/yr at this pace, but my job will be gone sometime at the end of this year, or the beaning of next year, I knew that going in since this is contract work, but didn't really expect this market crash. Kind of funny, over the last year we hired 800 people, and by 2010 almost all of us will lose our current jobs (me included), hopefully I get relocated instead of cut loose though.

Its all good though, I don't have the same issues some might have in job searching. I am willing to work anywhere in the world (whereas alot of people aren't willing to move even 100 miles). hopefully this economy doesn't screw up the whole dirtbag contractor business :p.

I do really feel bad for people coming out right now though, And financially responsible person will have a "rainy day" fund to tide them over economic troubles, but if you are just starting out you have no such fund. I am currently saving ~50% of my income since I know I will probably be jobless for an extended time, but people just coming out wont have anything to save them.

Many of the people of our generation (graduating 2000+) have the luxury of parents who are middle upper class and if they are foreign, [the parents] are now the children of immigrants and they've probably already made it. Conclusion: who cares if you don't get a job. You can live at home and then if that doesn't work, you can "cop out" and go to grad school. You can be one of those cool 30 year olds with multiple degrees and no work experience.

Shens?

IIRC he works as an entry level nuclear engineer at Watts Bar...so, yea, shens.

60-70 hours a week with 1.5X overtime is how...

note the qualifier "at this pace", but I expect to make somewhere between $80,000 - $100,000 this year. and have somewhere between $35,000-$50,000 in the bank by the end of the year, already have $20,000 saved in the last 9 months not including my 401k. However NEXT year I expect to be unemployed, so that's life.

It doesn't help when your networks are on hiring freeze. :(

I had a job offer after interning last summer, which I accepted, and was then told in Dec that they probably won't be able to honor their offers. It's complete bullshit too since I signed stuff and everything. I didn't think they could cancel it just like that.

You might be an exception - I'm talking generally. The difference in experience with employees with degrees and non-degrees are night and day.
