It's not Cheating if they have the old tests. That's like saying you cheated if you did problems from the book and then the teacher happened to include them on the test. What they're doing is very smart way of preparing. At my university you can go and get printout of old tests. The only thing worse than you turning them in, is thinking that what they're doing is wrong. It sickens me that people consider an advantage cheating. I guess all people with higher IQ's and better study habits are cheaters too.

Don't snitch on the student.

Instead, go leave an anonymous note at the department office to tell them how much of an idiot your professor is. That's the way to do it.

That's why we keep files on all the professors at the school. This isn't cheating...

Just make sure the teacher knows that folks have the old test. If she still uses the same test, fine. If she makes a new one, you guys are on equal ground.

My first semester Organic Chem professor had all his exams, 10 years, on file at the library. And he chose the exam questions from the old exams. I made sure I knew how to do all the problems from past exams and I got an A. But knowing how to do all the questions meant that I also knew the subject really well.

Don't worry about it. If you don't turn them in. It'll catch up to them eventually. They will go into a higher level class and dont even know the basics.

As above someone pointed out: they aren't cheating if they are looking at an old exam.

I they were really cheating, I'd turn them in...cheating is ethically wrong and is unfair not only to yourself but also to rest of the class. I say: Don't be a pussy...turn them in. What happens if the exam or future exams are way too hard yet the prof think it must be that most of the class is stupid because these 2-3 people aced it and gives failing grades to the rest of you. An extreme case, no doubt, but possible.

Then it's not really cheating. The professor should have the brains to realize he should use a different test. Unfortunately, a lot of my college professors used to do this crap too.

That's not even remotely cheating if a teacher uses the same exam from last year or whenever.

You're just jealous that they have an advantage and you don't. But they are d1cks for not sharing it.

if it's not cheating than there is no problem with him telling the professor right?

One of my professors told my class that we should get a filing cabinet and collect old tests from all our classes. It's not cheating unless the students steal the actual test that will be used.

For my second physics class (electricity and magnetism), I had about 40 old tests. The professor changed the test every time, but the vast amount of example problems helped me pass the class.

they weren't cheating. Even if you turn them in, the only thing the professor may do is change the test. Those students are not at fault.

It's not. If the lecturer uses the same test, it's his/her fault for not changing the questions or at least make more questions where she can pick them randomly for each exam.

Whoa here, they are stuipid for not chaning the tests (although this sounds like high school where instructors don't really take things that seriously) but that doesn't mean its the lecturers fault for thier academic dishonesty. Cheating is cheating, i don't care if the instructor sold you the test themselves. Cheating in the 8th grade is stuipid but no big deal, cheating in high school is preparing you for a hard time in college but hey you may never persue a degree that requires calculus so whats the big deal(maby). But cheating in college is down right fraud and should be punished.

If its high school id say turn them in, but i wouldn't blame you for not doing it. If its in college it is your academic duty under the honor code to turn them in.

But obviously wasn't too good at it.

Seriously though, how can so many people honestly think this is not cheating???

If you know for a fact that the test is going to be verbatim, that is cheating. If you don't think so, then you really have your head up your a$$.

You could walk in that room not knowing a damn thing about calc, sit down, and finish a ~3 hour exam in 10 minutes and get 100%. That is not an "advantage", it is cheating... plain and simple.
