Clarification necessary on DVD formats

So I was having a discussion with a friend about DVD formats and DVD players. She was telling me there were a bunch and all the compatibilities were different. From what I understand, there are two main camps (the + and - format) and - has high compatibility (in the low 90s?) with DVD players... not sure of the compatibility of +.

Am I correct?

From what I've seen, both of the formats will work in the majority of players out there. It's the very old players (1st generation equipment) that have trouble with +R I think.

Yep, that's about right.

I'm using all dvd+ right now (cuz i had to buy some media when i bought the drive, I just picked one or the other) and havent had any problems.
