They are different Latencies.... the lower the latency the better... CL1-Best CL3 worst...

Have you seen CL1 Memeory somewhere?

I have never seen CL1 RAM, but the lower the CL rating the faster the memory. CL2 memory will outperform CL3 memory.

CL1 (Cas 1) is out there... It is insanely expensive and very hard to find, but it is out there... Can't remember where I saw it, I think someone at these forums linked up to it somewhere...

CL1? really, I've never seen one,
i thought its impossible to create, even in theoretical terms.

Even if there are CAS1 modules readily available, what mobos support less than CAS2 timing?

Got me interested.... :)

I switched from CL3 to 2 and there's a noticeable difference for the better. I can't imagine how much better CL1 will make my system...

Go to Crucial.com and click on the 'GO' button to get a 15% discount off all their memory. Then just browse around 'til you find your RAM of choice. I believe it's gonna end up being about $100 for the PC133 256MB CL2 modules due to the shipping and tax.

I went from cas3 to 2 also, and although the benchmarks increased quite a bit, the overall performance didn't seem to increase.

It depends how much you want.... Its about $100 for 256Meg of CAS-2.... Which is an excellent price... If you're only looking for 128Meg CAS-2 Its running about $60 shipped....

Check it out at Crucial...

I don't know how reputable this store is, but here's the link.

I believe it's $70 for 256MB. Didn't check out the shipping. By the way, I got this from the Hot Deals forum so you should check it out for the other deals.

If it doesn't say CAS-2 it probably isn't.... I don't see that that link says CAS 2.... I have micron 7.5ns CAS-3 RAM too...

how woudl CL1 be theoretically impossible?

it's just setting the latency (cycles) to one...

im' no expert at memory, but seems completely viable, since some memory cycle settings, i have at 1..

actually, there's a total of four memory settings i can adjust - 3 of them are at 2 (cas, cas to ras, ras precharge), and the other is page idle timer, which is at one.

mobos do support CL1, mine does anyway...i once set my memory to CL1 and my system wouldn't post, obviously...i had to clear the CMOS.

CAS is "Column Address Strobe" and refers to the latency (in clock ticks) between when the column address is sent ("strobed")to the memory and when the result is available (and correspondingly, how soon until a new address can be sent).

It is a ratio of t(AC) divided by t(clk) typically rounded to the nearest whole number.

t(AC) is the amount of time from the column address being received to the data being available. And t(clk) is the clock frequency the memory is being clocked at.

Thus if t(CAC) is lower than t(CLK) then memory can be CAS1. CAS2 PC133 memory is CAS1 at 66MHz.

Based on the standard accepted definition, CAS0 memory is not possible.

Edit: you can see how CAS changes with frequency by looking at the table on the bottom of the ArsTechnica page ndee mentioned above.
