You wouldn't really learn anything since the AI gets random bonuses. If you want to do that just look up the "Let's Play Civ" series on youtube.

City states don't annoy me for whatever reason. I like the flavor that they add to the game.

I'm just really annoyed with the completely erratic and chaotic opposing Civ AI. There simply HAS to be a way to improve it. I know AI across the board in any game can be a daunting programming challenge, but this is absurd.

"Hi let's be friends!"
<I herd some sheep>
"DIE F*CKER DIE!"
<Wha??>

the only part that annoys me about city states are the "please go kill X" requests.

like, yeah... I'm going to destroy a city state and take a diplomacy hit around the world just to gain 250 gold's worth of influence with you.

The only downside to this game is that the AI stinks.

It's not fun when the AI is so bad at giving you a challenge or interacting with you.

Not played yet, But does can you do just an all AI game and watch?

I never tried setting this up in Civ V, but the last version you could set teams and say have 2 computer AIs on your team. I used that a few times to see how the AI did certain things like research and build orders.

I just finished my first game. I don't know what all the fuss is about--I enjoyed the game although it was very easy. I used to play 4 on Prince and it was a cake walk in 5 even though it was my first game.

Some aspects have been over-simplified but my biggest gripe with the game is global happiness. Combat is fun and limited resources give more depth to the game.

How did you find the AI handles the 1UPT limits? I always find that it's really easy to beat the AI as they can't seem to position troops to get the terrain benefits.

The AI was pretty dumb TBH. I only had to go to war once in the Classical Era--I was mostly fighting off barbarians and building a deterrent navy to keep the Romans out while I won the space victory. He had a stronger army but I didn't do open borders so he didn't declare on me. Then I had the whole continent and another large island just to myself and no one did anything about that. Maybe I need to try King or Emperor.

The AI still needs work, and the turn cycle times are still horrific in large games, even on very beefy systems.

That being said, I still thoroughly enjoy the game.

that's one discovery that definitely dented the game for me.

either allow open boarders and get attacked because of it, or refuse them and get spammed with requests every turn.

I don't know why some people don't like this version, because if you liked previous versions definitively you will enjoy this new one.

yeah more dlc. glad I've only bought that stuff when on sale along with getting the base game for!2, otherwise it'd be a damn expensive game.

I started playing Civ5 again recently, after leaving it alone for a long time. I still like it, though it hasn't reached Civ4+BTS yet. (And aesthetically I liked Civ4 more.) I kind of hoped they were working on a BTS-like expansion, but as far as I can tell they're just doing this DLC shit. (Haven't bought any of it.)

If you didn't like it before, some of the patches might help. Also, while previously I've never much been into modding, I've found a couple mods that really add interest to the base game without radically changing it. Look for "unofficial patch + vanilla enhanced", and "city-state diplomacy" (I think someone else mentioned those earlier in this thread somewhere too). I like the changes in those a lot.

I've mentioned it in this thread, but I still gotta +1 this. If Civ5 aggravates you try this mod, everything just feels better. CSD is fun but can be a little wonky sometimes. If you go Patronage, having the CSs gift you a diplomat instead of a great person sucks.
