the only DLC stuff that annoys me is when you've got it like how it was in DA:O -- actively pushed on you during gameplay. having a civ that I'd probably never use or a scenario that I'd never play won't make me lose any sleep.

I'm still loving the death of stacks of doom and looking forward to strategic city building (like making use of mountain and ocean tiles for reasons other than resources)... a city built surrounded by 3 mountain peaks and an ocean should be significantly harder to attack than a city built on the open plains.

What's a good source for an overall preview of this game? Gameplay vids, etc.

Thanks!

This is the 1st title in a very very long time i will buy on launch day.

2 reasons:
1. it's civ 5
2. they have done an extremely good job of patching and supporting civ4 over the years, which makes me comfortable with paying full price even if it is a bit shaky at launch.

EA Games alone has made me leery of buying games on launch day because they have a habit of pocketing your money and not patching at all.

demo coming out the same day as the game...
they previously promised it before the game release.
http://www.civilization5.com/#/community/demo_release_date

this sucks because i wanted to try the demo before deciding if i want to pre-order (it comes with some pre-order bonuses). now you have to pre-order without playing the demo if you want those pre-order bonuses.

Yeah - I guess pre-order could be considered "we have a proven track record of releasing a high quality and fun game - so this pre-order is for those who trust we'll deliver yet another addictive product for you to enjoy!"

Is the game available for pre-order in stores [with the same bonuses]? Maybe you could pre-order and then cancel if you don't like the demo?

it actually is available on amazon but D2D has the best pre-order bonuses right now and i don't think you can cancel from there.

i wonder what sort of discount or DLC inclusion there would be if one waited for the steam holiday sale to buy civ5.

I'm thoroughly confused about the bonuses now, after reading your last post I queued up Steam to place my pre-order and then for the sake of it checked out the civfanatics forum and found that there's different bonuses:

Map Pack: Cradle of Civilization: Asia
"The Indus River valley was home to the early Harappan civilization while the Yellow River valley in China saw the rise of the earliest Chinese dynasties. Both these regions would be included on the same map (which would be dominated by the Himalayans and jungles of SE Asia between these two fertile zones)."

Map Pack: Cradle of Civilization: The Americas
"Although civilization blossomed later in the western hemisphere, the region from Peru in the south to Mexico in the north was just as important as an incubator for the development of ancient cultures. This map would span this rugged area of jungles and highlands."

Map Pack: Cradle of Civilization: Mediterranean
"The period of Classical Antiquity saw the rise of city states from Phoenicia, Greece, and later Rome and Persia. Their struggles all centered on the great sea in the “Middle of the Earth”, hence the name Mediterranean. This map will cover the entire Mediterranean basin including the nearby peninsulas and coasts where these great empires grew and prospered."

Map Pack: Cradle of Civilization: Mesopotamia
"The pack covers the traditional Western and Middle Eastern "Cradle of Civilization". It will include the Fertile Crescent with the Nile River valley to the west and extending east down the Tigris and Euphrates river valleys to the Persian Gulf. Leaders will be able to explore new terrain, cultures and conquests."

Babylon Civilization with leader Nebuchadnezzar II - Deluxe download only, not confirmed as DLC

-----

It's a Steam based game and even if you order it off Steam you don't get all of that bonus content, wtf gives?

One thing i cant stress enough guys...

DO NOT GET CIV 5 FROM DIRECT2DRIVE!

those fuckers stopped supporting civ4 for win7.

They never updated the .exe to work properly, so you wind up playing at 800x600 with no settings to adjust. (the menus appear empty)

I even got a windows compatibility warning when installing the D2D version...

I had to get the game through "nefarious sources" even though i bought the title at full price on launch and i can't play games online... :(

Weird - I had no problems with D2D Civ4 and Win7 [64 bit] - I think it ran an auto update to patch it to the latest version though...

I'd personally rather get my games from a source where I can either sell it or "gift" it to a friend once I've finished or become bored with the game - Steam doesn't allow this ;)

oy, that's a good point... Civ 5 and the new FF online game are coming out within a week of eachother and I've been on the fence about which one to play immediately versus which one to wait a couple months on.

Did you have expansions installed?

Vanilla civ4 has the problem.

Civilization 5 is using steamworks no matter where you order the game from, so if you order from direct2drive all you need to do is take the serial key, type it into steam, and you never have to deal with d2d again for that game.

Didn't FFO get pushed back until spring? Also, all accounts said it was pretty terrible.

So I loaded up civ 4 for the first time last night. I got maybe half way through the tutorial and while I understand the point of the game, I still felt lost. In the tutorial and after you build the second city the narrator tells you to do what you think best. To be honest I had no idea what I should of built next. So many options, In most rts games its kinda straight forward what to build. While in this game its different and I was confused by all the commands, hot keys, and icons on the screen. Can anyone guide me on how to do a general build in this game?

I think that's the beauty of Civ, the right answer of what to build next might depend on where the city is, what your neighbor's doing or what kind of victory you're after. I always tried to build a temple early on, then go for production from there.

A few general tips

one of your early cities (one of the first 3-4, preferably one with a food resource) should be a settler factory. It's tough balancing workers/settlers/military units in the early game. It's very scary sending a settler out with no military escort.

get roads built between your cities and to resource tiles asap. You can put multiple workers on the same task to get them done faster, this is important for your first mines and other things with longer build times.

Nearby civs will attack if you look militarily weak. Show them your strongest units (patrol it by the border) and they are much less likely to. Unless you're showing a single warrior and he's got swords or something. Some civs are more likely to attack than others, but even Gandhi will come after you if you look like easy pickings.

you can automate workers, this is important in the end game

generally speaking, I nearly always build a soldier in the city first thing -- if there's no one around to defend it, a rival civ or barbarian can march in and take it over uncontested. after that, it depends on my needs and the game I'm playing (settlers, workers, more military, growth buildings, etc)
