I think people would be less critical if they didn't charge so damn much for it. $49 for what really is a game that's using the same engine and even some of the same assets is too much. It should have been $39. How much did they charge for Colonization? This should have been similar/

OK, thanks. The Sci-fi setting is a big part of why I am intrigued. Maybe if I just wait a while it will go on sale and get some of the bugs sorted. I am sort of getting sucked into DA: Origins and I imagine it will take me a while to finish that.

KT

This probably the better idea KT. I like to get the Civ games after the expansion comes out, they really tend to improve the game.

In Civ V there was an icon in the bottom right I believe that let you see food overlays, resources, etc. I don't see the same in Beyond Earth. It's kind of hard for me to pick a site to settle without really knowing the resources.

you can move your cursor over a tile and see its properties at the top right corner of the screen.

The science bonus is great for killing aliens! Seems like strange AI with the alien apologies. They are condemning me and then they turn around and kill them themselves only I can't seem to condemn them back.

Health is an issue for me too. It was going well until I took over and city and it's dropped down to 8 now. Not sure if it's a penalty for civil unrest or expansion though I only have 4 cities.

I played a round where I mostly left the aliens alone and they for the most part left me alone. funny how the harmony AI got mad at me for going supremacy but was slaughtering the aliens left and right.

as for health you just have to focus on health generating buildings and virtues. a lot needs to be built to support a new city. it's only hard in the beginning though. for the latter half of the game i had a 30+ surplus health without really trying too hard (with like 6-7 cities). went for the emancipation victory. it felt a little... sinister, lol.

I'm having a blast so far, and while I wouldn't have minded paying $40, I don't feel as though $50 is too much either. Compared to a lot of other things, the price of games hasn't really gone up that much over the years. 15 years ago most games were still around $50, but something like a 20 oz. bottle of coke has almost doubled in cost.

Is there a way to view all of your cities in a chart, as there was in previous versions? I'd like to see how production, food, etc. line up without having to scroll through all the cities individually...anyone know?

Thanks

Who paid $50? Some of you guys gotta learn about Greenmangaming, and fast. I got the game for less than $40, plus a voucher for another game, plus 6 free games (all though they are crappy, indie games).

The price wouldn't be so bad if it didn't appear to be little more than a Civ-V expansion pack. Same engine, some of the same assets, same core game mechanics, I'm sure it took a lot of effort but $50? I like the concept, but I think I'll wait until the inevitable DLC expansion packs make it better and then buy the whole package for $30 next year on a Steam Sale.

yeah, it blows my mind when i think about computer and console costs back in the day

i remember my parents paying 2$k for a computer in the early 90s, and 50$ for many NES games. thatd be like 4$k and 100$ now!

ArsTechnica has a review up.

I was really hoping for something good, but it looks like they took Civ 5 and somehow made it worse.

Ah well, at least Civ 4 still works.

Played the demo yesterday. Glad I didn't buy at release. For me it was super underwhelming for $50. Will wait for a good sale.

I was hoping this would be a great Alpha Centauri remake, but it looks like I should just keep playing the original SMAC.

I would for now. It doesn't have that magic feel that SMAC provided. I remember in SMAC it was tough as nails to play, this one not so much.

As usually I'll be interested in seeing what they do with a patch or two and ultimately with an expansion. Firaxis really has turned into a hit or miss company.

Wow, the mod on the steam forum named SamBC is being weird. People are upset about the resolution issues and instead of being polite, he's actually mocking them. When some members asked him to chill out he banned them. Usually the community mods keep cool.

Yeah I got it from GMG for $37. Good stuff.

Thankyou for bringing this problem to attention. Honestly not surprising at all.

Yeah, I'd probably just steer clear of the discussions on there for now. Hopefully the resolution stuff gets worked out.

Stupid question, I got an end screen and just one more turn was greyed out so I couldn't continue. It didn't say that someone else won so I'm kind of confused at 300 turns down the drain.

Strange. I got over 400 turns before I won using emancipation. It let me continue "one more turn", but I kept playing about 20 more turns. I think there is an option when setting up the game to remove the forced turn limit. I did a standard game speed, what did you do?

I also found it strange that it doesn't show game stats after the campaign. Having spent 10+ hours, it would be nice to see a bunch of charts.

hmm not sure how I set up the game. I'll have to got through it all when I setup the next one. I just remember picking world size, my faction, and a few other things. I guess I assumed like Civilization it would let me continue playing.

In Civ V one of the victory conditions is simply "Time" which basically means "he who has the highest score at the end of X turns wins" - we always turned it off. Something similar might be in place in BE.

I tried the demo and had absolutely no idea what I was doing. :D I think I will wait a bit before diving into this one. I thought it looked pretty darn cool though.

I'm enjoying the game so far. It's a bit toned down, much like vanilla Civ 5 but the theme is there and I really like the choices when you stat the game and how you can branch your techs.

But the AI is a bit weird from time to time. Nothing gamebreaking for me and I still have the "one more turn" syndrome with this game so it's a good sign.
