What? I'd be surprised if he could talk about what he's working on. Contractual work always carries an NDA.

This!!!
You're right and they know it
He has nothing to talk about and that's the best he could come up with LOL

We should be glad someone working on gaming software is here and could answer a few questions if asked in a good manner. Instead the Nvidia force attacks the guy, WOW

Not much draw calls going on in turn based games 😛

Weak CPU and you gonna die of old age by waiting for AI. Mantle or not.

It just wouldn't be a Mantle thread without numerous posts by you trying to downplay it. Why are you so fearful of Mantle? Every Mantle thread, same thing. I have a 7970, turning out to be the best video card I've ever owned. Mantle is a nice bonus.

Considering your choice of CPU I wouldnt expect anything else from you either 😉

Remember to buy all 4 games for 2014 so you can benefit.

If you have nothing of a value to contribute, stay out of the thread.

Something Something your Avatar.

I think your post qualifies for personal attack.

Where is Stahlhart when you need him.?
Lets get him to judge it.

What does his choice of CPU has to do with anything being discussed here? If he enjoys only 4 games w/ Mantle, how does that affects you?

Think real hard, why would someone have a problem with a guy enjoying AMD-only features? It's self evident, just nod your head in disgust and move along amigo.

Anyway, this may be the development that gets me to upgrade from my 5870 to a GCN2 card. This is the first Civ game I've been excited about since Civ2 (I had the original Civ1 in 1991). I think it should really benefit from Mantle.

Supporting Mantle, Eyefinity and Crossfire is pretty slick. I'd like to see more of that. I usually don't like Crossfire or SLI, not since I bought two 6800GT PCI cards on launch day for a hefty $850 and have seen enough issues with Xfire/SLI today that I'm not biting again.. but I could be convinced to put my 2 side monitors into landscape mode from portrait. Something like Civilization makes more sense to me than a FPS with Eyefinity.

Bigger news that no one is talking about, this game is launching with Linux support.
So, the Great Mantle-Killer DX12 won't be catching up to Mantle there, ever. Makes me even more fired up for Mantle to go to SteamOS/Linux. 🙂

Linux support smells like Valve's push to get great title for SteamOS. This game actually would play very well in living room and with controller.

Nothing. AMD has great DX/OGL performance AND Mantle. Butthurt much over that or what? Weird thing to search through my old posts in the middle of the day on a Wednesday trying to get me on something, where there is nothing.
Keep avoiding the thread topic in attempt to get it locked, since its existence doesn't work towards your obvious goals.

Why not? I will use it because it's an advantage to my customers. And also an advantage to me, because Mantle is a very simple API, exactly what I need for PC. D3D11 and OpenGL has very unpredictable performance, and this is drives me crazy.
You know many people just think that xy game has a very bad optimization. But this is mainly come from the API. Mantle is a way to make things better. Why not use it?

Thank you for contributing.

Can you give examples how mantle is more simple and how that is an advantage?

You have PM! 🙂

I bought this system for a fun build, something different. It fits my needs, and I really enjoy tinkering on it. In fact I am in process of installing a new motherboard now. (more power phases!)

Anyway, my choice of CPU has nothing to do with me thinking Mantle has a huge upside and has a ton of potential. Games that use it still are being made with DX as well, so I guess I don't see much of a downside.

I don't really play first person shooters. Thief doesn't interest me. But I do enjoy strategy games and RPG's, so I'm happy to see Mantle as an option for a game that might actually interest me. I enjoy playing with new tech.

There is no need to defend something, unless it is being attacked.

Judging something different isn't better shouldn't be done until the different has had sufficient time to get going.

DirectX didn't get where it is in a day or in 2 years for that matter.
Mantle has had its time, almost an 1 year now, but still nowhere near DirectX time.

Really a year!

Didn't it get announced around October november last year, and didn't it officially get release early this year? We are in month 4 of the year, but you say Mantle has had a year already and i take it you mean it lost so it should pack its bags and go!

Ok.

Firstly, 1 year was just from the top of my head, I didn't go fact checking. I was busy at that time.
It was an assumption.

Secondly, Mantle was announced end of Septemeber
http://www.anandtech.com/show/7371/understanding-amds-mantle-a-lowlevel-graphics-api-for-gcn
So it has been around for 7 months.

Third, if you read my posts properly, I was trying to defend Mantle, not attack it.

The last line from my post that you quoted , I was saying that even though Mantle isn't really that new ( maybe it is, everyone has a different definition for new) it still hasn't had the decades of time DirectX has had to get where it is now. I meant to say that as more time passes by, more performance will be extracted out of it & we will see a wider acceptance of it.

I think i expressed this point properly in my post or maybe not, as you misunderstood it. So i have written a clarification above for you.

Peace..

I don't know about others, but the idea of a futuristic Civ sounds appealing to me. I've kind of grown tired of the same basic theme every time I play Civ. Though it is fun to go back and make a run through, like I did the last few days, inspired by this thread, but I guess I'm not motivated enough to want to fine tune my strategies on the same old game.

I'm sure I could improve a lot, but I'm not hardcore, I guess. King and Emperor is all I care to play. I hate having to play against an A.I. that does not improve, but gets big time rule advantages in order to give a challenge. Really, if they want to improve on the current Civ 5, they need to improve the A.I., and not just give them huge advantages in order to compete.

nothing wrong with AMD winning; competition is good for the customers.

@everyone else.

so it's Alpha Centauri reboot. should be nice. could be nice. will probably suck bawls.

Competition is good. And so is Bawls! That drink is awesome 😀

I wonder if this will be a game where they try and get mantle running in Linux?
Mantle isn't coming to Linux.

OpenGL already has ways to reduce driver overhead that is supported by the big three. It can't do multi-threading though, it will need a rewrite for that.

I was just thinking this. I haven't seen any mention of that game at all in the news related to this new game. Alpha Centauri was a fantastic game, and this really is just a reboot of it anyway. Is Alpha Centauri available on GOG yet? I wanna play it again.

This comment is just an oxymoron. A relevant part of an API having low CPU overhead is to actually be multithreaded. Unless the OpenGL groupies think that reducing the CPU overhead involves pixie dust and black magic, spreading the workload evenly across threads is a key component in making an API with low CPU overhead.

Looks interesting, although I always had a hard time getting the hang of civ games.

Anyone else think the screenshots kind of look like Starcraft?

The screenshots look like Civ V because it is the same engine and tile system. I suppose they have colours reminicent of Starcraft as they are both located on alien planets but for me that is the only similarity.

I love all my turn based games, and it seems that the genre has recently reinvigorated itself.

OTOH... I don't think there is a worse candidate for Mantle than a turn based game.
But since its a freebie, i'm not going to complain too much

PS
It took us two pages to figure out that Civ isn't RTS :ninja:

It really annoys me when people call turn based games RTS. Apparently there are many people who don't know what the acronym stands for and have never heard TBS (which is what CIV is).
