civ2 is evily addictive

reinstalled it this week, and i just played with a friend for 10 hours straight... one sitting. reminds me of the old days where i did 24 hours straight of civ before i fell asleep. 😀

you can't get bored of this game. geez, i nominate the civ series of games to be the crack of pcgaming. 🙂

civ = ultimate game.

I just reinstalled civ2, and my productivity is now crap. Anyone know if Alpha Centauri is any good?

gameplay wise i like civ1 a bit more too.

but the interface and new features in civ2 make up for it i think. 🙂

ah, i still remember the first time i played civ1 at my friends house on his top of the line 486 dx2 50mhz, i was hooked immediately. had him copy it off the cd that came with his media vision pro studio multimedia kit onto two floppies. (geez, can't believe i remembered that soundcard cdrom bundle. hehe.) went home and tried to play it on my l33t 286 6/10mhz 🙂

i'm a civ freak and i'm proud of it! 😀

alpha centauri was pretty good. got it the first day it came out at bestbuy. lol.

i never got into it like civ1 or civ2 though. basic gameplay about the same with new features, but new units, new structures, new techs. i never made the transition over from civ, and i never got addicted to it like civ. 🙂

I played Civ2 more than I played any other game probably. That game is like "Just ONE more turn" and it ends up being the entire game 🙂.

I reinstalled it myself last spring when I got Civ2 Gold.

Several hours later, still in the first "test-it-out" game, I realized not again & immediately uninstalled it.

You're right. Civ2 is a classic and a truly awesome game. Unllike 99.999% of computer games, it will be around and played a decade from now (maybe in an updated form).

I read recently that Sid Meier (sp) has dropped his Dinosaurs game because he couldn't get the concept right, no fun.

civ2? my boss is hooked on civ. I gotta give civ a try, but i have a life now, (see the thread I posted about "move&quot😉 so i don't get time to game.

i was immediatly hooked on the original civ. I remember playing it on my old 386. I still have it installed on the computer and I go back and play it occasionaly, though I do play civ2 more.

My only problem with Civ1, is that a Phalanx in city walls can most of the time beat a Battlesihp (especially if the phlanx is vetran... etc.

Easy to solve. Just "box" in a city and drop the big one on them. Wait till the city is a "level 1" to march in. Then you don't have to takeover a "dirty" city.

does anyone else have problems with the wonder movie/video in call to power civ 2?

It ALWAYS crashed on me when it loads, and or won't go away after playing the movie. 🙁

I play Civ:CTP2 too much these days as well. I think the developers must put some kind of subliminal messages in there to make you play the game all day and all night without stopping.

Civ2 is the best! I've spent hours and hours playing both Civ1 and Civ2.

Very, very addictive. Said to myself at 7:30 PM one night I'd only play until 9:00 PM. At 4:00 AM the next morning, I had to hurry and get ready for work.

agree with you totally, Civ (in all it's flavors) has got to be the most addictive computer game ever...

on a related note, what is everyone's favored Civ playing style? Are you the type that aims for straight military conquest, overwhelming technological superiority, or another strategy altogether?

blend of both styles you mentioned.

go pure tech, but have enough cities to support a decent military later.
appease everyone and remain at peace (UN helps 🙂) until i research the entire tech tree, then it's time to beat some heads. 😀 of course there are sometimes exceptions when a country really pisses me off and i have to make a small task force to take out their civ. hehe.

this strat usually works well, most extreme case, i was done researching everything and had my armor, howitzers, carriers, cruise missles running around beating them into submission while the rest of the world just got musketeers. 😀😀😀

Yep i have to agree! 🙂

I started with the civ (dos version) and played it for ages... 🙂

upgraded to civ2 when it was relaised.

I have moved out and have my own computer now, so i have civ2. test of time installed and play it regularly! (i left civ (dos) and civ2 to my sister when i moved out). 🙂

civ series along with master of orion (1 &2) are some of the best games of all time. 🙂

(also x-wing (dos), tie fighter (dos) and more recently Homeworld also make the top games ever).

Also nice to here something other than Quake and halflife! 😉

<< civ2 is evily addictive >>

two years of my life disappeared into a black hole called civ2 😉

I'm used to games like Quake III and Counter-Strike but I also like Civ II. Civ II then got me into Age of Empires II. I guess I'm just a RTS and FPS gamer. They both are very interesting to me.

We used to actually PLAY CIV II here at work WHILE getting paid 😉 Since it was turned based it was considered alright 😀 lol Turned out after about a month the boss didn't like it anymore and now we can't play it while getting paid anymore 🙁

😀

Oh... loved that game... I remember I'd always try to move my gov't to Democracy as fast as possible to get my discovery turns asap. Usually Despotism > Monarchy > Republic > Democracy. Think I used Communism for my wartime gov't if I had enough funds to sustain a campaign. If not... Fundamentalism. 🙂

i absolutely sucked at civ1 when i first played it 😛
never knew how to maipulate the manpower within each city to maximize resources.

hmmm.... anyone knows where i can find a version of civ1? i remember a while ago that it was already freeware....

😛

I had civ1, civ2, and alpha centauri, but civ1 was definitely my favorite. I have vivid memories of destroying entire empires still in the bronze age with two carriers full of nukes 🙂
