City wide dining specials. Do other cities have this?

For several years now Vancouver has had an event during Jan-Feb they call Dine out Vancouver. The idea is to help out restaurants during these troublesome months, help get more tourism dollars, and give residents the chance to try out some fine dinning. Now a lot of these are not really dine dining but there are quite a few that are. Restaurants that decide to opt into the program have to offer a 3 course meal at one of 3 price points $18, $28 or $38, plus a suggested wine parring. All the restaurants and their menu choices are viewable online and you can reserve online. Usually there are only 3 or 4 possible menu choices. The idea is you get to eat a 3 course meal at these select restaurants for less than you would regularly pay for said meal the the restaurant gets a guaranteed boost in customers during these hard months. It's also nice for the customers to have this fixed menu price across all restaurants and menus. Any other cities have something similar?

I haven't taken advantage of this in previous years but I think we will tonight.

I was about to say we do, but then I realized you were talking about Dine out Vancouver :p

I should really make a point of going this year. Cioppino's is calling.

edit: gah, Cioppino isn't on there.

I highly recommend Burgoo though. Fantastic soups and bistro french food.

There are a few cities that have similar specials. I know in New York City they call it restaurant week and it's exactly lke you described. Here's a link

Yup, DC and Bethesda both have Restaurant Week.

It usually sucks. Lots of people who don't normally eat out, the waitstaff isn't usually the A guys (because the aforementioned group is out, they don't tip well im told). The RW week menu is usually kind of shitty at most places, so you end up ordering off of the main menu anyway. Also, the place is usually packed.

I avoid it anymore. It's not a good way, at least in DC, to try a place you ordinarily wouldn't because it isn't usually a good menu.

Went out to a bar / restaurant tonight. Wasn't that bad, not amazing but will definitely try it again before the event's out. I can see it was a savings looking at their main menu. Will try Burgoo next time, was high on my list and silverpig happened to mention it too.

Lafayette, LA has a thing called "eat Lafayette!". basically promoting the local restuaruants and in the parish ( aka county). Chains and locals places partici;ate by putting dining info and specials on a website. Not done to the scale of the OPs city with the coupons and jazz. but Still a nice way to become aware of some of the local cuisine.
