city names in other languages

There is a city in New York which in English is named New York City. I've seen Hispanic publications call this same city Ciudad Nuevo York.

Is that proper? If my name were John, would it be correct to call me Juan?

In a spanish class, yes. Out on the street probably not. They also have signs up on the Mexican side of the border calling the United States Los Estados Unidos and in Canada calling it Aux États-Unis. I'm pretty sure that Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was a lot easier for us to say than whatever CCCP stood for.

They probably call it "la ciudad de Nueva York." It's fine because the word "New" is an adjective which is easy to translate. Translating proper names is not appropriate. I would never call George Washington "Jorge Washington."
