I just got a citibank card and my bank account has not been approved for payments yet. It takes 6-7 days to approve the bank to pay online. Well my payment is a few days away, and my Bank Account will not be approved by then. So I had to pay via phone. They charged me a $15 dollar fee to pay my bill over the phone.

What gets me is, they asked for the same information I put in online. Same exact info, and in 30 seconds my bank account was processed and set up for payments on their system. But only for over the phone payments. The payment went through today no problem.

I have 3 credit cards and none of them charge me for over the phone payments unless I am late. And I am never late.

Has anyone else dealt with this citibank policy?

Yep, that's the latest and greatest citibank fee.... Keep a close eye on anything you do with citi or BOA, they are master at building in tricky fees for all sorts of things. Then when you call and complain you can usually get them waived (at least once).

I would call back and say your friend pays by phone and isn't charged. that is an utterly ridiculous fee.

I got socked with that fee too. I've never seen online payment requiring a week's processing time to add a funding source, so I added my checking account a week before my bill was due. Ended up having to pay over the phone and pony up the $15. What really gets me is the checking account I was using to pay was a CITIBANK ACCOUNT! :|

Could you have paid in person at a Citi branch to avoid the fee?

OMFG I am pissed. I just called them and he just kept telling me what the "best he can do is" and he cannot do this and cannot do that and that some members qualify for a "No payment over the phone" and some do not and all this bullshit.

I'm gonna call back and speak with someone else this is getting me no where.

Yep, I'm seen that before but with Bank of America. though there fee is only $7. Either way, ANY fee to pay over the phone is retarded.

Welcome to the Citi experience, where no opportunity to sneak in a fee is missed ;)

Why are you setting up a payment on the citi site, does your bank not allow you to set up a payment to any payee instantly online?

Well I finally talked to someone I could understand, and she told me to call back tomorrow and they should be able to put in that request but there is nothing they can do today as the payment is processing.

Customer service is the pits nowadays. It's really sucks when you have to pay them to pay your bill.
Dish Network charges the same thing if you try to pay by phone.

BOA is the same. I heard a report a few months back that said the large US banks had expanded/merged to the extent allowed by regulations. So now there trying to increase profit from overseas investments and fee increases.

Yeah. I will never deal with Citi again. They refused to send me a copy of my credit card because of the purpose that I needed it for... a balance transfer from that card to a new 0% apr card by a different company. The only reason I was able to do the balance transfer is because I knew the last four digits and the first 12 is listed on my credit report. It wasn't until AFTER I transfered my balance that they sent me a card. I'm talking I waited about a month for the card, then a few days after the transfer happened, bam. It was in my mailbox. Was it my fault for cutting up the card? I suppose.

Screw Citi.

I have had Chase, BOA and Capitalone. Never have I had to pay a fee to pay over the phone.
But, I was always able to complete my bank account payment the same day I signed up for a bank account payment. I am going to call them tomorrow morning and every 10 minutes from that point until I get that credited back.

OP, doesn't you bank website allow you schedule/send payments online? Should only take 1 day to process.
I NEVER use the indivudal crditors websites to pay bills, I always send payments directly from my bank. Centralized that way.

I had no idea that it was going to be this much of a hassle. It seems that is was purposely designed to get you to pay via the phone for at least the first month.
I haven't had this credit card very long, and have never dealt with Citibank before. Now I know.

That may be true, but I had my login information from the get go and setup my bank account immediately. I still had to call them regarding the online payment though.

Actually, I prefer it the other way, but precisely because it's centralized. If I authorize Citi to pull from my bank account, and something goes wrong, there's only Citi to blame. No finger-pointing between Citi and my bank.

However, I will not authorize a creditor to do automatic withdrawals. I want to specify the amount that's going to leave my bank account.
