Citibank Visa NO MORE!?

OK..am i the only one who's still in the dark?
i have had a visa card from them for years...
they now tell me i'm getting a new card...
so i'm asking why...and they say its gonna be a
MASTERCARD...WTF?!@&#$
they say the entire Citi"visa" is no more and all
cards are turning into Mastercards...

correct me if i'm wrong..but i think Visa is more widely accepted
worldwide, any shop that accepts CC cards will definitely
accept Visa but not the other way round.

IMHO VISA is more widely accepted than MasterCard is and I would like my CitiBank VISA to remain a VISA. However CitiBank has been planning this product switch for a long time and there's nothing we can do about it. Eventually ALL CitiBank cc's will be MasterCard. Why they decided to go with MasterCard exclusively instead of VISA and MasterCard escapes me. They probably worked out a better deal with MC, it all boils down to $.

My CitiBank Divident Platinum Select card is still a VISA but one of these days they'll probably send a MasterCard and I'll reluctantly switch since I have no choice.

can u recommend a good visa card?...no annual fee...virtual#..etc..i know theres been threads about this but
i'm lazy 🙂 and i know u know the answer hehe...
by the way, does it hurt ur credit to cancel a long-time visa card and then get a new card?
i mean if i cancel my soon-to-be MC...and get a Visa from someone else...would it look bad credit report wise?
also, anyone knows if Visa-check cards like the ones from your local bank(mine is bank of america) can be used overseas
as a Visa card?..or it need to be a REAL visa card.

If travelling bring a visa (it is most widely accepted) but I've got a visa and mastercard and happen to use MC all the time. Out of hundreds of purchases never a place tell me they don't accept MC.

Don't know if it has virtual numbes yet, but Fleet Titanium Visa has a whole mess of features to it. I'm still going over everything mine has.

I'm not sure if they're good but MBNA offers a VISA and I believe they also have the one time use cc feature as well. The only other two issuers I know that offer this are CitiBank and Amex.

If you'd like to compare other cc's, I've found Best-Card.com to be an excellent resource.

They did that to me two years ago WITHOUT notifying me. I got a letter asking why I hadn't activated my "new cards" even though my old VISA and MC were fine and still had years before expiration. When I called to ask what it was about, they immediately cancelled my cards and issued new numbers to "prevent fraud". Unfortunately, I had used the card to make reservations at a nearby hotel because our landlord was fumigating the house (right before X-Mas no less!!!!!!!) I had also used it to make online gift purchases for relatives in other states and those were still pending.

To shorten the rest of a long story, they couldn't get me new cards fast enough, wouldn't talk to the hotel directly, and couldn't understand why this was a problem. The hotel required a card so we couldn't check in and had nowhere else to go. Gifts that were in process for three people were cancelled. After X-Mas I called and told the managers that 10+ years of loyalty had been eternally purged from my system and to keep their fscking cards. After a series of SIX phone calls to management they finally sent me a letter confirming the cards had been cancelled at my request. Screw Citibank and all its "CSRs".

I would avoid MBNA if possible - they're mostly those CC's that they offer at universities. A group of my friends, including myself have terrible experiences with their customer service ...

my 2 cents

I got a Visa from MBNA when i was in college...still use it. No annual fees...and its got the one time use thingy. Never really had to call customer service...so i dunno how that is.

I've never heard of a merchant accepting only ONE of visa or mastercard. There must be like 3 in the world, so that visa can claim superiority somehow - but honestly, I wouldn't sweat it.

The only time I've ever had a problem was when someone gave me a gift that I returned, that they purchased on a visa... the merchant offered to refund it onto my car (it was a shirt or something, and they didn't have my size) but they could only refund onto the _same_ card type, IE a visa since that is what they used.

I normally have one visa, one MC (citibank, ironically) and an Amex in my wallet... annoyingly enough, my Visa was a nextcard, and they went belly-up!

i recall a monopoly lawsuit or something to that nature because mastercard and visa were collaborating to take over the market. i could be wrong or dreaming though. i have a citibank mastercard and have never had trouble using it anywhere (except costco ... i need an amex for that but amex blue keeps rejecting me =P)

i used to use a check card. no monthly bills. ive found that i like the bills though, because i actually know where all my money goes (FOOD). check cards don't have any rewards for spending (cash back, etc.) and fraud protection is iffy ... probably up to the bank methinks. amex or citibank will fight for you. =) i like that in a card.

Citibank switched my Visa to MC over a year ago. No reason given other than to "provide me with better service" (yeah right).
