Citibank finally offers one time use credit card numbers!

I just checked my statement online and there's this new web- or desktop-based credit card generator you can sign up for. Even lets you specify the limit and set for recurring charges! It's about time they caught up with AMEX and MBNA. Excellent... very, very excellent.

Just thought I'd spread the joy. 😉

Citibank - Virtual Account Numbers

edit: oops, in my jubilation I forgot the link. Thanks Rossman!

Be careful with them, I got triple billed for something from an online vendor. It rejected two of their virtual CC numbers, then finally accepted my regular number. Turns out they were actually going through, in spite of the failure notices.

That put my CC over the limit.

:|

Probably a vendor issue, though, but it still sucks that the first time I ever use the feature I get screwed.

Viper GTS,

Thanks for the forewarning, next time I buy something online I might try this and hopefully won't receive the same failure notices. If I do, I'll ignore them for a few days just to confirm that it's not another fsck up.

How is the software?
Any feedback/hints/tips on the process?

That's definitely good info and thanks for the heads up!

<< This might be a really stupid question, but whats the benefit of Virtual Account Numbers? >>

they are only able to be used once so if someone gets a hold of the number they can't charge anything to your account

Not only can they be set to only be used once, you can set a limit on them.

Now that I have this feature I'll probably offer to subscribe people. Send me the cash via PayPal, I'll send you a one-time use CC number with the amount you'll need. That way people won't have to go through the hassle of changing their password & trusting me with their account. 🙂D)

I used their web based utility, & it seemed to work well. Took me a while to find the place to set the limit though, I wasn't initially sure if it was possible.

<< But what do you all think about using this for subsciptions .. like AOL? >>

That's another situation where you want to use this feature. For example, I recently paid for a 6-month promotional newspaper subscription with an MBNA one-time use CC.

I set the dollar limit and expiration date. The newspaper will attempt to automatically renew my subscription at the regular rate, but even if I forget to call them to get a subscription rate, they won't be able to charge my CC.

At that point, they wouldn't send a bill to your house, would they?

All you porn fans could get your AdultCheck ID's without risk, too.

Viper GTS or anyone else,

Are we able to send a one time use credit card with custom limit and expiration date to someone via e-mail as like a gift?

Not that I can find.

I do show one of the two virtual credit card numbers I tried to use as being charged, even though the merchant showed it as rejected.

This is not a good sign.

Bummer, she was going to use it to register for a BigZoo.net ISP account maybe I can register for her but using her billing name and address. Otherwise I may send her a WebCert.
