Citibank CC 5% rebate at food, drug, gas stations

Got the letter about Dividend cards being upgraded Sept. 1, 2004 too. The other notable change is that starting Sept. 1 you only have to accrue $50 in Dividend dollars to receive a check, rather than the $100 before. And you have to call in to request the check, rather than having it automatically sent.

All in all, I like the changes. Higher rebate for "everyday" purchases, lower minimum amount to receive a check.

I've also gotten this letter so I called and asked to get this benefit earlier. The CSR told me Sep 1 is the earliest they get do it for me.... crap
I'd call back and talk to someone else, this time not mentioning the letter. Just say you want the 5% added onto your account.

I just got this card (new account), but on top of these benefits, it's at a fixed 8.99 APR instead of the 9.99 variable APR. Their online system for generating new numbers is pretty cool. You can generate a number with or without a limit and you can "disable" that number whenever you wish. They also provide you with a stand-alone application that will do this as well but I just use their online system since I could be at any one of 5 different computers when buying things online.

This might sound strange, but do credit card companies allow you to pay off the monthly balance with another credit card? I use a debit card that acts like a Visa card for all my bills and purchases. However, I wouldn't mind getting this credit card for its benefits, but I'd want to be able to pay the monthly bills with my Debit/Visa card. I never use checks.

It's called a balance transfer and it usually has fees associated with it.

It may be a bad idea to use debit cards instead of credit cards. This is why:

"When a credit card is used fraudulently, the only consequence is that you get a bill and you dispute it.

When a VISA or MC Check Card is used fraudulently, the money is GONE from your account... and gone WHILE you convince the bank to put it back."

Warn your friends and relatives about this as they should call their Banks and switch back to regular ATM cards without the VISA (or Master Card) logos. Tell them not to fall for any story the Bank will tell them in order to prevent them from going back to regular ATM cards because this what "No Liability guarantee" may mean for debit cards:

If you're with certain other banks, it's even worse: The bank itself will start charging you over the limit fees after you notify them of card loss. (That's in addition to people you wrote checks to that bounced):

"reminded me that I also owe them a lot in overlimit fees. To get my money back, I had to make a statement and have it notarized - guess what - they only would accept cash at notary, isn't that ironic. Took a week to get the money credited, another week to have fees reversed, and all that time I felt like I had to beg for my money..."

I already have a Citi Platinum Select MC. So I need to apply for a new card to get their Dividend card to get the 5%, correct? And when you charge gas at any normal gas station (ie. not Sam's), they'll take off 5% of that part of my bill?

I had the Citi Platinum Select Shell Card that gave 5% at Shell and 1% everywhere else. The sole reason for me using this card was as a gas card, it just happened to be a MasterCard as well. I called up Citi and asked if I could be given the Dividend rewards on the Shell card and was told that I would need to apply for the Dividend card if I wanted it's rewards.

So I'll keep my Shell card until I receive the new card, then I'll activate the new one, and close my Shell MC since I won't need it anymore. 5% back at all gas stations is awesome! The Shell card saves me something like $15/month in gas. The only drawback to the Dividend card as opposed to the Shell card is that whereas the Shell card applied credit immediately to your statement, you have to wait until a check is mailed to you with the Dividend card. But as I see it, I'll be saving more in the long run since there are some stations that are cheaper than Shell that do accept CCs.

Also remember that if you close down a credit card to make sure you have the CSR note that the card was closed "at the user's request," otherwise there's a possibility that it could negatively affect your credit rating if you're opening a closing a lot of cards.

While you guys are applying for this card, may also want to apply for the photocard option. It's free and of course you have that extra security. Took them about 2 weeks to process my Photocard.

Also, I believe they reset your 300 limit every year. So if you say only accumulated 60 bucks at year end, they'll send you that 60 and reset your account to 300.

For those of you using the MBNA AAA card for 5% gas rebates, the gravy train is over. I just got my notification that they're going to a 2 - 5% sliding scale based on purchases like most of the other cash back cards out there. Guess I'll be cutting that one up!

Anyone knows if this works at a Super Target? policy says "Supermarkets: Merchants that sell a complete line of food merchandise for home consumption." Super Targets do that now, but if it just comes up as "Target" on the card (as it does) it may be treated as a department store.

Thanks for the merchange links! I also found out you have to request your rebate check! They will not send it out to you automatically.

I also recently discovered this when I logged onto CitiBankCards.com

Before the new 5% promo (back when everything was 1%) they would automatically send a check once you reach $100 dividend (or $10,000 in purchases charged). My balance was around $89.25 dividend, I requested a check and received it a few days later.

CitiBank rocks!

do they pay the rebates monthly or yearly?

do u have to have more than 50 bucks in rebates to be able to get the rebates?

do they pay the rebates monthly or yearly? - Whenever you hit 50, so time is not an issue.

do u have to have more than 50 bucks in rebates to be able to get the rebates? YES

1) If your dividend $ balance is $50 or more, you can request a check whenever.

2) Yes.

The Divident Merchant Network makes this far hotter as they actually include merchants a lot of us Anandtechers spent money at.

Best Buy, Buy.com, Cingular, CompUSA, Dell Home, Expedia.com, Netflix, Office Max, OfficeDepot.com, Priceline.com, T-Mobile, Target, Travelocity.com and Verizon Wireless are included in that merchant program. What makes this even more hot is that the money you earn through the dividend network doesn't count toward your $300 annual maximum. Combined with the 1% regular cash back, this program allows 6% cash back on most these places. At places which count as supermarkets and drugstores (Drugstore.com, maybe SuperTarget?) this means a potential of 10% cash back. This can also be used to purchase gift certificates.

Online purchases require you to be logged in through the Citi Dividend Merchant Network website before going to the merchant website.

Anyone see a catch? Other than the fact that this is all through Citi Bank? If you get this card, just make sure you make your payments on time. Don't give them any opportunity to screw you over. Also, keep in mind that if you're not paying your balance in full each month, no rewards program is worth using a credit card.

dang it. i just got my card last night and bought an e173fp with it, but i didn't go through the merchant network site. could i get a credit?

My wife and I have been using this card for awhile (registered under my name/SS#) and we are about to max out the $300 annual limit. So, we got a separate card (registered under my wife's name/SS#) so that we can get another $300 in cash back.

😀😀😀

Interesting question, I spent almost $1000 at dell yesterday, and they come up as 2% on the merchant network, wonder if i'll be able to call a csr to aplly the credit.

BatmanNate - No since CostCo only accepts cash, check, debit and American Express cards.
No VISA or MasterCard credit cards are accepted (except for online purchases, maybe).

nnnyyy - You are correct and checks.

I have an ATT Universal Card that i got as one of those college student cards a few years ago, and recently it was bought by Citi, so i looked into it and noticed they had a card that seems to have all the same features but a lower intro and variable APR, and some added ATT features.

check it out.
http://www.universalcard.com/us/cards/ucs/cashrew.htm

this is gonna save me like 5+% so what if i lose the word "platnum" on my card my limit doesnt change, and i pay less, and get back up to $300 a year for a 3 minn phone call to upgrade my card.

do these cards charge interest from the day you make your purchase? so that when you receive your first statement, you have some cents and dollars to pay already?
