Cisco hires bank to sell home wireless router unit: report

Networking equipment company Cisco Systems Inc (CSCO.O) has hired Barclays (BARC.L) to sell its Linksys home router unit, a report said on Sunday.

The business, which Cisco acquired for $500 million in 2003, will likely be valued for less because it has low margins, according to Bloomberg.

The sale is part of Cisco's strategy to shed its consumer unit and focus on its software and technology services businesses.

Last year, Cisco axed its Flip camera business as part of this strategy.

I never understood why Cisco was in low margin consumer markets. Doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the business.

Dell might as well buy them considering the other companies they have bought fairly recently.

Considering Cisco didn't adopt the brand with their name or integrate any good technology into the brand... It's a wonder it didn't make any money.

Linksys wasn't good before or after the merger.

What are you talking about? As soon as they bought it they redesigned the chassis and put Cisco on it. And linksys WAS good for what it was prior to the acquisition - something inexpensive for the home use market.

i guess brand recognition is valuable... but in a technology market where most consumers dont even know what a router is let alone what brands are good?

I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung bought them. They seem to be getting their fingers into everything else technology related.

I agree. My E4200 version 1.0 is an awesome router.

Same here. I had a 54gl before it and the previous high end dual band before the E4200. All worked great and my next will probably be another when AC gets rolling.
